 Oregon State Library Board met on Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Independence Public Library in Independence. The board approved the recommendations from the Library Services and Technology Act Advisory Council and the Talking Book and Braille Library Advisory
 Council. They also heard reports about both the 2016-2017 Ready to Read grants and the Oregon Library Association Legislative Committee. The board also discussed the State Librarian evaluation process and the board’s roles and responsibilities. Additionally,
 the board and staff received a tour of the Independence Public Library from director Robin Puccetti. The board will hold its planning retreat on Thursday, January 19th, followed by its regular meeting on Friday, January 20, 2017 at the Oregon State Library
 in Salem. </span><o:p></o:p></p>

 Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen has returned from her trip to China. Highlights of her trip included taking a high-speed train (125 mph) from Nanjing to Fuzhou, exploring a historic village featuring tulous (earthen buildings), and visiting both the Fujian Provincial
 Library and the Fujian Children’s Library. She also drank plenty of delicious tea while trying to survive the tropical weather. Dahlgreen gave a presentation at the Fujian Annual Library Conference, entitled “Oregon Libraries: Now and in the Future.” She felt
 honored to be traveling with the 2016 Horner Library Exchange delegation (Richard Sapon-White (OSU Libraries), Veronica Vichit-Vadakan (Oregon College of Oriental Medicine Library), and Jian Wang (PSU Library)), as well as Rosalind Wang (retired librarian)

 Measure 97, raising corporate taxes, is the most expensive ballot measure in state history, with campaigns, pro & con, raising well over $30 million dollars? This tops the amount raised for Measure 92 (2014) regarding the mandatory labeling of genetically

 April, the Modern Language Association came out with the 8th edition of the </span>
</span><em><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">MLA Handbook</span></em><span class="style101"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">. Their philosophy for citing sources is now based on using critical thinking and some flexibility to apply a
 core template to any source. Also, the concept of containers is important to understand. OSLIS’ Citation Maker is used around the country by K-12 and community college students and others. The
<a href="http://secondary.oslis.org/cite-sources/mla-secondary-citation">secondary version</a> of MLA Citation Maker was updated to the 8th edition guidelines in late September, and the
<a href="http://elementary.oslis.org/cite-sources/mla-elementary-citation">elementary version</a> is expected to be available by mid-November. To learn more about MLA 8, check out the
