(I talked to Kari May a little further about the situation). I personally appreciate all the statements about reasonable accommodations, this conversation has been a good reminder! (I am always of the opinion we try to serve all patrons fairly, the same, and to the best of our ability, and those with disabilities where possible also receive additional accommodations as much as we have it in our power to do so) and I appreciate the very creative ways to help serve this patron that were suggested. I think a fun wifi/tech/electronics free zone for a day may work for some libraries! I also can understand where Ted is coming from as a now retired library director stating his personal opinion, sometimes we just want people to use common sense in what libraries can do practically. After years of hearing some very crazy requests (And I’ve had some doozies), it can get hard not to roll our eyes a little. That said, we do want to respect legitimate requests! Hopefully all of these great suggestions will help Kari May. I think it comes down to, we love that library patrons ask, it never hurts to ask, often we can find solutions, but unfortunately at times, given our limited resources, unfortunately we cannot accommodate everyone every single time.

Sincerely,

Esther Moberg

From: Libs-Or [mailto:libs-or-bounces@listsmart.osl.state.or.us] On Behalf Of Michael Bowman
Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2019 1:31 PM
To: libs-or@listsmart.osl.state.or.us
Subject: Re: [Libs-Or] Patron accommodation question

There may be a way to accommodate this patron’s request. The consensus was that that turning off the wifi wasn't a reasonable accommodation for this individual and that a variety of outreach activities were offered. It's a difficult situation, but wifi is an essential library service and turning it off on a regular basis (days and times) would not be reasonable.

Leah
Leah M.
