We have a patron with the following request:

I suffer from a condition called Electro Hypersensitivity, also called microwave sickness. Many others also suffer from this condition (Alan DeBoer's wife is one). When in the presence of a strong wifi signal, my symptoms of ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and headaches worsen.

I am requesting there are days and times when wifi is turned off for people like me. I LOVE reading and have checked out many books from the library.

Have any of you encountered similar requests? How would you handle this situation?
We haven't had this one exactly, but here's my thinking. ADA requires that
we make "reasonable accommodations" for people with disabilities. Turning
off the wifi so that nobody else can use it is probably not "reasonable."
But maybe there is something else you can do for this patron that would be
a reasonable way to help her use the library.

I know you probably don't have legal counsel readily available to advise
you. One piece of advice we have had from our counsel is to not go down
the rabbit hole of questioning whether this person's disability is "real."
Since ADA does not allow us to ask for any kind of certification of the
disability, that isn't helpful. We just take the patron's word that they
have a disability and then try to determine what we can reasonably do.

I hope this is helpful!
Do you have any kind of home-bound services? I might point her that
direction. I'm not sure that turning off the wifi is a reasonable
accommodation, at least, it wouldn't be at my library.
This was a question from a few years ago (I think I remember it was from Ted Smith, who's now retired from Newport PL). The consensus was that that turning off the wifi wasn't a reasonable accommodation for this individual and that a variety of outreach activities were offered. It's a difficult situation, but wifi is an essential library service and turning it off on a regular basis (days and times) would not be reasonable.
If you have the ability to offer some kind of outreach service, I'd agree
We have a patron with the same illness. She requested that the wifi be
turned off, all cell phones (including other patrons phones) and our
cordless phones turned off while she was in the building. We felt this was
not a reasonable accommodation since it would disrupt our phone service as
well as the other patrons. We have offered limited research services for
her and have carried books out to the car for her. We did try to find other
facilities in town that had wired internet service but were not successful.
We have a patron with the following request:
I suffer from a condition called Electro Hypersensitivity, also called
microwave sickness. Many others also suffer from this condition (Alan
DeBoer's wife is one). When in the presence of a strong wifi signal, my
symptoms of ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and headaches worsen.
I am requesting there are days and times when wifi is turned off for people
ADA describes "Fundamental alteration" as "a change that is so significant that it alters the essential nature of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations offered. "

It seems to me as well that turning off Wifi on a regular basis to accommodate a single patron would disrupt what is, as pointed out, an essential service, as noted in the definition above.
This was a question from a few years ago (I think I remember it was from Ted Smith, who?s now retired from Newport PL). The consensus was that that turning off the wifi wasn?t a reasonable accommodation for this individual and that a variety of outreach activities were offered. It?s a difficult situation, but wifi is an essential library service and turning it off on a regular basis (days and times) would not be reasonable.
For what it's worth, before my hearing got worse (it went away in my early 30s), the high pitched whine from TVs, computers, and WiFi boxes used to drive me nuts. It sounded like an annoying, tinny, never-ending version of a mosquito. I used to unplug things in rooms to be able to sleep at night. Maybe that's what she's referring to?

I agree with other people that it wouldn't be fair to make the other patrons lose out on Wi-Fi to accommodate the needs of the one. Perhaps offer to have her email a list of books she wants, and you can set them at the front desk for a fast checkout?
Could noise-cancelling headphones help? I'm honestly curious. If so, maybe keep a pair at the desk for use while she or others with similar sensitivity are in the building.
Subject: [Libs-Or] Patron accommodation question

We have a patron with the following request:

I suffer from a condition called Electro Hypersensitivity, also called microwave sickness. Many others also suffer from this condition (Alan DeBoer's wife is one). When in the presence of a strong wifi signal, my symptoms of ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and headaches worsen.

I am requesting there are days and times when wifi is turned off for people like me. I LOVE reading and have checked out many books from the library.

Have any of you encountered similar requests? How would you handle this situation?
