Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) has book club kits focusing on a National Health Observance as way to bring awareness and increase health literacy.

Heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States, is largely preventable. There are many things people can do to reduce their risk: exercise, make healthy food choices, and also visit their healthcare provider regularly. February is American Heart Month, but any time is a good time to help raise awareness about heart disease and prevention.

To help get the conversation started, visit the NNLM Reading Club Book Selections and Health Resources: Heart Health<https://nnlm.gov/all-of-us/book-selections-and-health-resources/heart-health>. Choose one of the three featured books, then download the discussion guide, promotional materials and corresponding resources. Short on time? No worries! Apply<https://uiowa.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_06WNH2NRorHNWap> for a free NNLM Reading Club Book kit.
* Oregon state government is a large organization by nearly any standard. With over 40,000 employees working all over the state, in small communities and large, we are proving that government can be innovative.
We work as a team, challenging ourselves to be better, faster and more efficient with taxpayer dollars.
After all, when every day we are responsible for caring for the needs of a diverse population and thriving business community, we simply must have the best and brightest workforce. If you take responsibility for your actions, are passionate about helping others succeed, and have a reputation for excellence and honesty, why not make Oregon state government your next career move?
Joining our team means you open the door to many possibilities. From entry level to executive, outdoor work to policy setting, we have a role for nearly every calling, expertise and background.
If you're looking at us from across the country (or beyond!), know that Oregon is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Made up of seven diverse regions, Oregon has the ocean, mountains, valleys, high desert, cities, small towns, and almost everything in between.

REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information
Services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking, supports efforts by community
members to having courageous critiques and difficult conversations on
publishing, marketing, and discussions of books based on Latino
experiences. The pain, anger, and disappointment that community members are
expressing are not solely based on a single title or author. Rather, the
critiques we have seen are a response to the systemic silencing of Latinx
authors and communities of color by the publishing industry. It is apparent
that the stories of our communities are often valued by the industry when
produced by those who have not lived the experiences first hand. The power
behind publishing, promoting, and consuming stories is immense; what we
read shapes the national consciousness.

We are also saddened that it appears our experiences can only be profitable
when our trauma is exploited and sensationalized. In turn, the Latinx
experience is flattened into one-dimensional stereotypes, where we only
exist to be vessels for trauma and pain; our redemption can only be had
when we turn away from our roots and each other to strive for the hegemonic
American Dream. REFORMA would like to applaud the coalition building that
this national conversation has created. We have mobilized; the call to
action has been made. REFORMA has also taken this moment in time to
evaluate how our members can be better represented in the publishing world,
and what we as an organization can do to achieve this. REFORMA has begun
discussions on establishing a dedicated reading list and an annual Adult
Fiction Award highlighting the stories that are written by and resonate
with Latinos. We call upon our members to be part of this movement, and
hope to begin these initiatives shortly.

Established in 1971, REFORMA has actively sought to promote the development
of library collections to include Spanish-language and Latino-oriented
materials; the recruitment of more bilingual and bicultural library
professionals and support staff; the development of library services and
programs that meet the needs of the Latino community; the establishment of
a national information and support network among individuals who share our
goals; the education of the U.S. Latino population with regard to the
availability and types of library services; and lobbying efforts to
preserve existing library resource centers serving the interests of
Latinos. For more information on REFORMA, visit reforma.org
Are you a "jack-of-all-trades" librarian who wants to spend less time ordering books and more time on the reference desk?

Is your busy technical services department looking for ways to automate everyday processes such as editing batches of MARC records from vendors? Do you want to process new items faster to get them into your patrons' hands sooner? Do you simply find yourself wondering, "Is there an easier way to do this?" about any of your library?s technical services work?

Library staff members spend a lot of time making sure patrons can access their resources, both physical and electronic, and finding ways to improve these workflows is important.

Join us February 13th to explore ways to make everyone's life easier when it comes to ordering, processing, cataloging, and weeding our libraries' resources.
Smart Cataloging: Beginning the Move from Batch Processing to Automated Classification

As libraries seek out new ways to support discovery and reuse of collections and library data, the creation and curation of high-quality metadata is becoming even more vital. Attend the 10:00 a.m. keynote session with Terry Reese who advises that in order to be successful, "libraries in general will need to seek to leverage the wide array of open data sources to improve not only traditional workflows but to also begin leveraging more intelligent services or algorithms for the purposes of automated classification and no-touch cataloging services."
