Library Director, I struggled to engage staff and board members with periodic strategic planning initiatives for several reasons. First, research shows that staff members do not value strategic planning because they believe the final product does nothing but
gather dust on a shelf. Second, the strategic planning tools available to the library did not seem appropriate to a service-minded institution.
