<b>Dynamics in Rural and Small Town Libraries</b></p>

This course examines the setting of libraries in rural and small-town communities. Students will use both quantitative and qualitative research to understand these communities where many libraries are located. Students will examine some of the barriers to service
librarians face in rural/small-town settings such as lack of staffing, healthcare, funding, technological infrastructure, and educational opportunities, while dealing with minimal resources and social isolation. Through research, writing, interviews and a
culminating project, students will gain an appreciation for the rural/small-town library and its vital role in its community.</p>

Bob LeMoine has been a high school librarian for 14 years and has also worked part-time in a small-town library. He received a M.Ed. from Plymouth State University and a M.L.I.S. from San Jose State University. Bob has published several peer-reviewed biographies
and game articles for the Society For American Baseball Research and has a forthcoming book on Babe Ruth and the Boston Braves planned for 2022. He lives in the small town of Epping, NH.</p>

Carmen Cowick provides training, support and consulting services for libraries in the areas of preservation and collections care. She previously worked as a preservation specialist at Amigos Library Services and in the library and archives of The American Irish
Historical Society, The Seamen's Church Institute, and the Special Collections department at CUNY Queens College. She received a bachelor's degree in art history and a master's degree in library science with a certificate in archives and preservation of cultural
materials from CUNY Queens College in New York City. Ms. Cowick has written numerous scholarly articles on preservation-related topics and is the author of the books Digital Curation Projects Made Easy and Crash Course in Disaster Preparedness.</p>

This course explores the importance of the role of parents/guardians as a child’s first teachers and how librarians can foster the development of early literacy in the home. Students apply knowledge of community evaluation and childhood development to the design
of parent education and outreach services. Emphasis will be given to outreach in historically underserved populations, encouraging parent interaction with children, and early language development in children ages birth to 5 years old.</p>

Elizabeth Hoffman is the Director for Plum Creek Library System in southwestern Minnesota and the current chair of the South Dakota Library Association’s Young Adult Reading Program. Prior to joining PCLS, Elizabeth worked for Emporia State University’s School
of Library and Information Management. She has also worked in Youth Services at Siouxland Libraries in Sioux Falls, SD where she developed collections and programming for children, teens, and families. Elizabeth received her BSEd in History and Social Science
from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and her MLIS from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX.</p>

on the board of the Oregon Library Association’s Children’s Services Division, and on the 2022 YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction committee. Jeana is SLIM’s West Coast MLS academic advisor.</p>

the Public Library Association, the American Library Association, the Urban Libraries Council, TechSoup for Libraries, and more. Brenda lives in Lawrence, Kansas with her husband and 10-year old son.</p>
