<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;color:#2F5597">Tina Roberts, Language Arts Education Specialist at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE), and I partnered on an update to ODE’s challenged materials guidance for Oregon school districts.
 Many people were consulted during the process, and the new guidance document was posted this week.
<b><u><a href="https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/ELA/Documents/Addressing%20Challenged%20Materials%20in%20K-12%20Education_%20Guidance%20to%20School%20Districts.pdf"><span style="color:#044A91">Addressing Challenged Materials in K-12 Education:
 Guidance to School Districts</span></a></u></b> is available on the ODE <u><a href="https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/library/pages/default.aspx"><span style="color:#044A91">Library Media</span></a></u> and
<u><a href="https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/ELA/Pages/default.aspx"><span style="color:#044A91">English Language Arts</span></a></u> webpages as well as the State Library’s
<u><a href="https://www.oregon.gov/Library/libraries/Pages/School.aspx"><span style="color:#044A91">School Library Services</span></a></u> webpage. Today ODE announced the updated guidance to Oregon superintendents, curriculum directors, school principals,
 and a few other groups.   <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;color:#2F5597"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:12.0pt"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;color:#2F5597">The guidance is aimed at school districts, but the
<b>recommendations section has specific information for districts, administrators, classroom teachers, and school library staff</b>. The information should prove helpful for private schools, too. In an effort to be proactive and prepared for potential challenges
 to library and other school materials, I encourage you to <b>review the document and to share and discuss it</b> with building or district staff. Page 1 provides background and includes a table of contents.
