Dear CARLI members and colleagues:

Today brings troubling news.

CARLI received a termination notice last night cancelling our IMLS 2024 LB21 Planning Grant, “Consortial Collaboration for Academic Library Leadership Success” (CCALLS), to plan possible extension of CARLI Counts to other US library consortia: https://www.carli.illinois.edu/carli-receives-imls-grant-consortial-collaboration-academic-library-leadership-success-ccalls<https://www.carli.illinois.edu/carli-receives-imls-grant-consortial-collaboration-academic-library-leadership-success-ccalls>. For authority, the notice references President Trump’s Executive Order 14238<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/continuing-the-reduction-of-the-federal-bureaucracy/__;!!DZ3fjg!9Zp1n0ROCqQNElFrF7l8ryEhD20Vy-bagjLZk12qgbcbyK2uuIql3B4_bRgkShrG6Mwz3HS8r2ib2300B_thqvBdxQ$>, “Continuing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy,” issued on March 14, 2025.

The Illinois Fire Service Institute also received notice that the grant, “Libraries as Partners for Emergency Preparedness and Response in Times of Crisis,” https://imlsgrant.web.illinois.edu/<https://imlsgrant.web.illinois.edu/> on which CARLI is a partner organization, is terminated.

Like countless other US libraries and library organizations, CARLI members and the students and faculty we serve have benefited immeasurably from the work of the Institute of Museum and Library Services since its 1996 creation. Programs and services supported by the funding IMLS administered have provided wonderful, worthwhile opportunities for learning and enrichment for Illinois residents.

We are working with our partners and the University of Illinois System on next steps.
