NC has provided scholarships with LSTA funds for years. Around COVID we shifted to a "choose your own adventure" approach (as opposed to us selecting a few conferences) with the thought being local needs can vary and staff know best as to what they need to learn about.
We probably spend around $50,000-$70,000 a year and provide CE scholarships to 35-65 staff across the state. We have a seen a wide range of conferences selected from academic and public libraries, including the traditional library conferences like ALA, PLA, ACRL, Internet Librarian, etc. but also some non-library conferences like the American Society for Engineering Education (academic librarian) and the International Dyslexia Association Annual Reading, Literacy, and Learning Conference.

Folks are generally happy with the program, overall it isn't a big budget, but it allows staff to grow and we often hear that this is the only way staff can get to conferences.

Alaska also provides grants for continuing education. It's a flat $1250 per person reimbursed after the event. The recipient has to submit a final report w/ receipts and an evaluation of what they learned. The most grumbling we get is from Alaskan libraries over the award amount or the limited amount of awards.

Michigan provides stipends for continuing education. We don't reimburse for travel, but have a flat rate and we "pay" for an article or presentation they do when they return. The expectation is that they will training on what they learned to colleagues in their library or libraries in their local area. We've been doing it for years and IMLS has not pushed back on it.

Hello,
I'm relatively new here at the Utah State Library and am wondering about the latest LSTA guidelines on travel for library conferences for subgrantees. It seems we've always used state funds to award travel and training, vs LSTA. We're very much in the exploration stage at this point, and would appreciate experience and input. Could anyone please provide some details and a link or two?
Specifically, the concept is for a grant in which funds would be for Utah tribal librarians/representatives (and possibly a state library representative) to attend an out of state conference, which we would likely tie to a portion of the LSTA grant being for tribal library enhancement related to the conference. For example (completely made up numbers): $3,000 library enhancement project award plus associated travel to a conference of up to $2,000 for a total of $5,000 award...
Thanks in advance,
Melanie
