[lstac] [External] Re: LSTA subgrant for conference & travel?

We have had one request in the past for an international conference. Like Karren, we looked at if it was reasonable for their work and if the staff could attend a similar event in the US. We could not find a comparable event so we determined it was allowable.  I was also very clear about the Fly America Act in their notification.

Not sure if we would make the same decision today though.

We have had international travel requests and grant them if the conference is reasonable for their work. We don’t increase the funding. Anything out of state is $1,800. We offer lesser amounts for conferences in state (1 day  - $300/2 day - $600/3 day - $900). We will also reimburse up to $500 in registration costs for non-degree classes.

Hi to all,

Illinois has offered scholarships in the distant past using LSTA as the funding source.  We currently do not offer a specific grant for individuals to go to CE events, but we do offer programming grants where the applicant may budget grant funds to attend or present at appropriate conferences.   Travel is allowed – “as a prudent person would do.”

This year, a subgrant requested an amendment of their budget to use grant funds to attend a conference in Canada.  We said no – and made the decision that we would not approve international travel.

As a sidebar of this conversation, I’m curious if anyone else has had requests to use grant funds for international travel to CE events and how you responded.

Hello,
I'm relatively new here at the Utah State Library and am wondering about the latest LSTA guidelines on travel for library conferences for subgrantees. It seems we've always used state funds to award travel and training, vs LSTA. We're very much in the exploration stage at this point, and would appreciate experience and input. Could anyone please provide some details and a link or two?
Specifically, the concept is for a grant in which funds would be for Utah tribal librarians/representatives (and possibly a state library representative) to attend an out of state conference, which we would likely tie to a portion of the LSTA grant being for tribal library enhancement related to the conference. For example (completely made up numbers): $3,000 library enhancement project award plus associated travel to a conference of up to $2,000 for a total of $5,000 award...
