Thanks for the information everyone! The applicant listed a 5% indirect rate, and I know that isn't the State of Alaska's indirect percentage and it isn't the de minimis amount. I'll check in with the applicant and see what is going on.

Kate

I don’t have lot of experience with indirect costs but will echo what Karren shared. It’s always been academics, and so far the ones I’ve encountered have a negotiated rate agreement that they provide. My understanding is that we h

Even within the agreements though, the rate does appear to be a selection of choices (again as Karren noted). Madison did make it clear that I’d have to honor the rate they negotiated.

I’ve attached the ones I’ve seen here in Ohio from The Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati for reference.

I was actually working through some questions of my own about indirect costs with Madison before the shutdown ended that conversation. ;(

Are you referencing academic libraries? I understood it as public libraries are not likely to have their own indirect cost rate agreement from a federal agency so they could just take the de minimus by requesting in the budget of their grant application. For academic libraries, they must provide a current indirect cost rate agreement with a federal agency with their grant application and I keep that on file as part of their application documentation. I do have to squabble with universities sometimes when the agreement has multiple rates depending on the work being funded and they pick the highest rate, not the appropriate rate.

Does anyone have an example of what they share with libraries to certify the federal negotiated indirect rate? Or can you at least help me explain to a library what I need to keep on file? (I am supposed to keep something on file, right?)

Thank you!

Kate
