Fellow state managers and supervisors,
We need your help. Our colleagues at Oregon State Hospital need volunteers to take emergency assignments so we can continue providing care and treatment to some of the most vulnerable people of Oregon. Any extra sets of eyes or hands will help.
As you know, the pandemic has been taking its toll on our coworkers, those who have been sick, those caring for sick loved ones, and those who’ve lost childcare due to the pandemic. For many state agencies, this means important work may be put on hold — but the hospital doesn’t have that option. We have people to take care of 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Oregon Health Authority, which oversees the state hospital, has exhausted all other staffing options, and our circumstances are dire. We have reached the point where we must come together to support our sister agency. Just last week, we had approximately 33% of our Nursing staff out on COVID-related leave.
Training
People who volunteer for emergency assignments at OSH will have:
· 6 days of new employee orientation
· 9 days training in basic Nursing tasks
· 40 hours of on-unit orientation with a mentor
Duties
All emergency assignments will be on the OSH Salem Campus. Once trained, those who volunteer for emergency assignments will be able to support Nursing staff on the units. The registered nurse will delegate duties based on the volunteer’s skill set. Duties will include:
* Serving patient meals
* Escorting patients to a variety of treatment activities
* Working with hospital staff to provide activities on the unit
Preferred qualifications
OSH especially needs people with nursing and direct-care experience, or familiarity with the behavioral health system. The highest need is for people with RN, LPN and CNA licenses, as well as those with care-giving skills. However, anyone who has good people skills is encouraged to volunteer for an emergency assignment. The need is great, and any assistance you can provide will better enable OSH staff to do their most critical work – patient care.
Pay
Volunteering to work at the OSH Salem Campus is considered a temporary reassignment. Managers and supervisors who volunteer will continue to be paid at their current salary during their emergency assignment.

All of you have important jobs, especially our managers. However, as we’ve done previously during the pandemic, this is another time when we must set aside our regular duties for the greater good.
We serve the people of Oregon because we are passionate about helping people. I’m counting on that passion now to help the hospital and the people it serves.
