Subject: MDT Question

Hello Tera,

Thank you for forwarding my questions to other MDT members around the state.

Question:

Our MDT (Jackson) is currently discussing community based advocates becoming participating members of the team. One of the concerns voiced from some team members was that advocates could work against the prosecution because they would be privy to information from the team they may otherwise not have had and could alert a person they were working with to a plan of action (ie DHS planning to remove children). It was also said that MDT is prosecution-led so having community-based advocates as a participating member may not be appropriate. Currently we only have advocates from the District Attorney's Office on the team.

My belief is that the addition of community-based advocacy would be a benefit to the team and add a resource both in information/perspective but also as a service resource for those children/families who never meet the DA advocate because a case is not filed, etc. I would sincerely appreciate any MDT member contacting me to discuss this matter further and help me understand how this is working, or not working, in other MDT's.

Specifically I would be interested in the answers to the following questions:

Do any MDT's have community-based advocacy as a participating member?

If community-based advocates are on an MDT what, if any, concerns had to be addressed prior to them becoming a member?

If community-based advocates are on an MDT what benefits has the MDT seen for the team?

Thanks very much to anyone who can help. Please feel free to contact me at carrie.hull at ashland.or.us<mailto:carrie.hull at ashland.or.us> or 541-552-2126.
