________________________________
Description: Adolescence is a time of amazing physical, social and emotional development-- second only to infancy. Knowledge of adolescent development empowers those who work with youth to build processes and interactions that advance healthy development. This presentation will provide participants with an overview of key adolescent brain development concepts and an opportunity to discuss implications for their everyday work. Foundational reading and video resources will be distributed in advance of the webinar.
Speakers: Liz Thorne, MPH is the Adolescent Health Policy and Assessment Specialist for the Oregon Public Health Division. Her work focuses on creating the conditions necessary for young people to be healthy and thrive. Liz conducts statewide surveillance of a broad range of adolescent health issues, and supports the development and evaluation of evidence-based policies, programs and practices that support the healthy development of youth in Oregon.
Julie McFarlane, MPH Women's Health Operations and Policy Analyst with the Oregon Public Health Division and Manages a number of grants and programs that address the public health response and prevention of Domestic Violence and Rape Prevention Education. She also works on a variety of other women's health issues including preconception health.

[The following materials are to be sent to participants in advance of the webinar. They will serve as foundational documents that our webinar will build upon. WATCH: PBS Frontline "Inside the Teenage Brain" Available online at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/teenbrain/ While somewhat dated, this program provides a good primer on adolescent brain development in an easy-to-watch format. READ: "Beautiful Brains", National Geographic, published October 2011. Available online at http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/10/teenage-brains/dobbs-text This article provides a more in-depth and current review of adolescent brain development from an evolutionary perspective-- adolescent brains are not "works in progress" but rather, beautifully adaptive for their stage of development. "The Teen Years Explained: A Guide to Healthy Adolescent Development". Available online at http://www.jhsph.edu/sebin/s/e/Interactive%20Guide.pdf This guide provides a lot of information about adolescent development across several topic areas. For the purposes of this webinar, participants should read the "Brain Page" on page 16.]<http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/teenbrain/>
