Child Abuse Prevention Month Activities Around the State

Clackamas County- Children's Center will launch its second year campaign around Child Abuse Prevention Month. Throughout April, Children's Center volunteers will hand out nearly 20,000 pinwheels, 10,000 informational postcards, and engage in critical conversations with shoppers at Clackamas Town Center. The Clackamas Town Center campaign also includes bathroom mirror clings, entry door clings, banners, and signs stationed throughout the mall. All collateral includes the local child abuse hotline number.

Children's Center volunteer speaker's bureau will present at more than ten community groups including Kiwanis, Rotary, and Optimist clubs. Board members will make presentations at Child Abuse Prevention Month proclamation readings at ten city council meetings within Clackamas County.

Executive Director, Barbara Peschiera will be interviewed for Clear Channel Radio & iHeart Media Les Schwab Community Promise. The interview will be edited into a series of PSAs shared the first week in April. Barbara will participate in a discussion with John Erickson on the iHeart Media Community Affairs Show to discuss child abuse as a health epidemic. Finally, Barbara will participate in interviews with Portland Radio Project and Metro East to continue to raise awareness about child abuse in our community.

As part of the Board's commitment to launching a prevention program, they will be hosting Darkness to Light Stewards of Children trainings on April 20th and 27th. Both trainings are open to the public.

Coos County - The Kids' Hope Center<http://www.childabuseintervention.org/about-us/our-board-and-staff/2-uncategorised/29-caic-coos-bay-address-site> kicked off Child Abuse Prevention Month with its annual pinwheel ceremony. The Kids' Hope Center will also kick off a new training program.  See attached flyer for more information. Curry County- On the 13th the Mayor of Gold Beach is going to a proclamation at their next city council meeting. Yesterday the director of CASA & I place child cut outs & pinwheels on the lawn of the county courthouse. I have notified the newspapers about April being Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month.

Douglas County- CARES is working to present a proclamation before the County Board of Commissioner for Child Abuse Prevention Month. We also are doing press releases, and participating with DHS, CASA, Family Development Center ( Relief Nursery),  BPA, ESD Early Learning, and others in a KIDS DAY event April 25th at Wildlife Safari. The event brings in approximately 300 to 1000 kids during the day, weather dependent.

Jackson County- On April 8th we are having a Family Fun Night at Alba park.  Agencies will have booths/tables with things for families to do together as well as resources for those who need them.  Fire truck, face painting, arts/crafts, games, police officers, Panda Express (and the Panda) etc.  On April 9th we are doing the Stand In for Child Abuse-at noon we meet in alba park and we have readers read stories of abuse out of Jackson County ( with no identifying info).

Klamath County - Various children's agencies held a gathering at the courthouse on the Day of Hope. A sheet of dry wall was pushed over, as it represented the wall of silence surrounding child abuse. A cherry tree was decorated with blue ribbons, representing child abuse, and orange ribbons, representing animal abuse.

In the last several years, we have been an active participant in the Stop The Hurt community coalition seeking to bring more awareness to child abuse within our community. Today, we will take our work into a new era by collating and distributing literacy packets to children in Klamath County under the age of 7 (approximately 1,500 children). These packets contain a bilingual Klamath-Lake CARES coloring book, bilingual positive parenting tips from the CDC and bilingual literacy tips from Reading Rockets.

On April 25, we will host our annual fundraiser. Eight local performers will provide musical stylings for the Best of the Basin Broadway Revue in a dinner theater environment. We expect Congressman Greg Walden to be among our guests, who will number more than 200. The evening provides quality entertainment, while drawing attention to the work of Klamath-Lake CARES.

Lake County - Going to the Head Start and elementary school and make pinwheels with students.

Lane County- Kids' FIRST Center is hosting a Draft Party April 30th at Hop Valley in Eugene. The party will start at 4:00 PM with the NFL Draft starting at 5:00. We have two UO Game balls autographed by Marcus Mariota, De'Anthony Thomas, and La Michael James, we will be auctioning one off at 6:30, and the raffle drawing for the second autographed football will be at 7:00. Raffle tickets are $10.00 each, we will also be giving out door prizes for raffle participants throughout the evening. Multnomah County- CARES Northwest is hosting a Pinwheels for Prevention "planting" in the Legacy Emanuel Children's Garden at 11:00am on April 8.  Students from Boise Eliot Elementary School, their teachers and parents will join us in planting 240 vibrant blue and silver pinwheels symbolizing the joy and freedom every child deserves.  Dr. Dan Leonhardt, Medical Director of CARES Northwest, will speak about the positive impacts of child abuse prevention and Odelsa Taylor of OAASIS (Oregon Abuse Advocates and Survivors in Service) will speak about how everyone can help protect children. Please join us for this beautiful celebration! No registration necessary.
