Upcoming Trainings:
MDT Day 2015
presented to you by Oregon Department of Justice, Crime Victims' Services Division
Monday April 20th, 2015, 8:00am - 5:00pm
Red Lion Hotel on the River - Jantzen Beach
Keynote: Aileen Videki and Rachel Mitchell, Sex Crimes West Bureau Chief, Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
This presentation will highlight the case of a woman who was the victim of sexual abuse in the guise of a plural marriage from ages 11 - 20. The investigation of the case revealed a number of issues that made the successful investigation and prosecution of this case difficult: multiple false accusations, bizarre elements, delayed reporting and extreme behavioral and mental health issues. Law enforcement and prosecutors will learn how to overcome these "obstacles". Professionals in the medical, mental health, and educational fields will learn to identify and properly respond to red flags of abuse. This presentation will be by the attorney who prosecuted the case as well as the actual survivor.

>From Ann Seymour's Monday Missives:
My friends at the Urban Institute have just published a study of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth in New York City that highlights something I was totally unaware of, "survival sex," or trading sex for cash or shelter. The practice is common among teenagers and young adults who, the report finds, have few other "viable means for meeting their basic needs" (Huffington Post). Please take a minute to check out the report or at least the wonderful "highlights" at http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/2000119-Surviving-the-Streets-of-New-York.pdf.
Other News and Opportunities:
An article from NPR on health effects in later life of child sexual abuse: http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2015/03/02/377569413/can-family-secrets-make-you-sick.

Thank you for all your hard work on behalf of Oregon's children!
