To prevent youth in the child welfare system from becoming involved in the juvenile justice system, NCCD and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) partnered to develop an actuarial screening assessment<http://tracking.etapestry.com/t/31265375/1236193179/69252723/0/64819/>. A new report<http://tracking.etapestry.com/t/31265375/1236193179/69364913/0/64819/> from NCCD outlines how Los Angeles County DCFS used the assessment to classify youth by their likelihood of subsequent juvenile justice involvement, enabling the county to focus prevention service programming on youth at highest risk of dual-system involvement.
In a webinar on Friday, January 22, Chief Program Officer Dr. Jesse Russell<http://tracking.etapestry.com/t/31265375/1236193179/66450354/0/64819/>; Shay Bilchik, founder and director of the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform (CJJR)<http://tracking.etapestry.com/t/31265375/1236193179/65593010/0/64819/>, and representatives from Los Angeles County DCFS will discuss the findings of NCCD's recently released report<http://tracking.etapestry.com/t/31265375/1236193179/69364913/0/64819/>. NCCD recognized Equal Justice Initiative founder Bryan Stevenson with the Media for a Just Society Awards' highest honor, the Distinguished Achievement Award<http://tracking.etapestry.com/t/31265375/1236193179/69484080/0/64819/> at an event in October. In her remarks, CEO Kathy Park<http://tracking.etapestry.com/t/31265375/1236193179/66822948/0/64819/> noted that "Just Mercy is the epitome of what the Distinguished Achievement Award was created to recognize: a strong, humanizing work of art with a love of justice at its core. It unflinchingly portrays some of the worst problems with our justice system, and the most severe effects those problems can have on a person's life. Most of all, it shows us exactly what is at stake in our systems, and what an incredible impact one person can make."
