Help protect children from early trauma
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)<https://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/361147/3402907/34897/2/> are traumatic events that occur before age 18. ACEs include abuse and neglect, as well as parental mental illness, substance use, divorce, incarceration, and domestic violence.
Protect children through prevention activities
Research about the lifelong impact of ACEs underscores the urgency of prevention activities to protect children from these early traumas. When children experience trauma, professionals who understand the impact of ACEs can help mitigate negative outcomes through trauma-informed interventions.
Many communities are exploring how reducing ACEs can help prevent child maltreatment, produce healthier outcomes, and save costs. The 2018 Prevention Resource Guide offers two state examples of ACEs prevention efforts.
Use the Prevention Resource Guide to understand ACEs

From Ann Seymour’s Monthly Missives:
If you ever wonder about the “next generation” of young leaders who are concerned about individual and community safety, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to listen to a great podcast, “Hidden Crime: Human Trafficking” that was planned and implemented as a high school senior year project by my young friend Jillian. This is the first in her podcast series that looks at the impact of trafficking; it not only educated and inspired me, BUT I also got a side-lesson on how to produce a great podcast! Please check out Jillian’s podcast at https://soundcloud.com/hiddencrime/human-trafficking-podcast-ms-sherri-41418-2 (and make sure to “like” it ☺).
Another trafficking resource! From my friends at the National Children’s Alliance, here are a multitude of resources for effective responses to commercially sexually exploited children (CSEC): http://csec-response.org/
“Victim” or “Survivor”? This opinion/editorial I read this morning reminded me of how personal and sometimes complicated this issue is! Please take a moment to read: https://www.thelily.com/i-was-raped-call-me-a-victim-not-a-survivor/
From National Public Radio, here’s a great article and radio program about “A Lesson in How to Overcome Implicit Bias”: https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2018/04/19/604070231/a-lesson-in-how-to-overcome-implicit-bias
I did not know there was even such a thing as “digital self harm,” so this summary of a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health was highly informative: http://www.jahonline.org/article/S1054-139X(17)30313-0/fulltext

Spotlight on Strengthening Communities to Support Families
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month<http://bit.ly/ncapm2018>, a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to strengthen families to prevent child abuse and neglect. Child welfare staff at all levels are natural leaders to help strengthen communities in supporting child safety, permanency, and well-being—whether by raising awareness, training community partners, or developing innovative partnerships to increase child maltreatment prevention.
Facts
No single service, program, agency, or service system acting alone can prevent child abuse and neglect. Collaboration is both a core value and a strategy that agencies must have for prevention efforts to succeed.
The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) calls for collaboration between child welfare and domestic violence, substance abuse, and other service agencies to help prevent and treat child abuse and neglect.[1]
In 2016, Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) agencies, supported by CAPTA funding, collaborated with mental health services in 40 states, domestic violence services in 38 states, and substance abuse services in 34 states.[2]
Resources
The Capacity Building Center for States (the Center) supports jurisdictions in their efforts to strengthen both their own capacities and their communities' capacities to provide a broad array of services. These services can provide support for families with co-occurring issues, chronic neglect, connecting families, pregnant and parenting teens, and preventive services to increase protective factors and reduce risk factors.
States can partner with key community-based stakeholders to assess service gaps and develop service arrays that are accessible in all areas of the jurisdiction and can be customized to meet unique family and individual needs.
The Center offers resources to build agency capacity for strengthening communities to support families:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that there was a nine percent increase in pedestrian fatalities from 2015 to 2016. (1) A recent report from the Governors Highway Safety Association states that “Pedestrians now account for a larger proportion of traffic fatalities than they have in the past 33 years.” (2) This webinar will provide an overview of data on pedestrian-related fatalities among children and describe the efforts of two organizations, the National Center for Safe Routes to School and Safe Kids Worldwide, to reduce risks to child pedestrians. Kristin Rosenthal, program manager for Road Safety at Safe Kids Worldwide, will share information on child pedestrian injury and death rates in the U.S. and findings from a study that Safe Kids conducted on pedestrian behavior. Nancy Pullen-Seufert, director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School, will explain why the Center launched Vision Zero for Youth, an initiative to encourage cities to prioritize safety in places where children walk and bike, and she will describe the increasing commitment to Vision Zero by cities and states around the U.S. She will also discuss ways in which child pedestrian safety and bicyclist safety can be woven together.
