>From Anne Seymour
Thanks to the inspiring victim impact testimony of over 150 young Olympian athletes last week, the world has learned about what a VICTIM IMPACT STATEMENT is, as well as what we term "the power of the personal story." The New York Times published this article about the use of VIS: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/26/health/nassar-victims-testimony.html. And I realized this is a good time to refresh us all with the some research and background information about VIS; first from my friend and favorite judge Paul Cassell, "In Defense of Victim Impact Statements" at http://moritzlaw.osu.edu/students/groups/osjcl/files/2012/05/Cassell-FinalPDF.pdf; and next a study by VIS researchers Janice Nadler and Mary R. Rose, "Victim Impact Statements and the Psychology of Punishment," at http://scholarship.law.cornell.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2908&context=clr. Now more than ever, we have the opportunity to help folks understand the value of VIS not only to survivors, but to JUSTICE!
The FBI has released its preliminary semi-annual crime statistics (Uniform Crime Reports) for the first half of 2017, which found slight decreases in crime:
https://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2017-preliminary-semiannual-crime-stats-released. MMM will include the final UCR data when they become available.

The Buzz Around Buzzwords: New Resource Series
Introducing Buzzwords: Moving to Behavioral Descriptors<https://capacity.childwelfare.gov/states/focus-areas/child-protection/buzzwords/?utm_source=january29&utm_campaign=buzzwords&utm_medium=email&utm_content=buzzwords>
Subjective words, or buzzwords, sometimes used in child welfare reporting, case documentation, and court reports, can negatively influence how a caseworker, supervisor, manager, or even a judge views a child or family. These perceptions may lead to unintended biases affecting assessment and decision-making. The video, tip sheet, and discussion guide from our Buzzwords: Moving to Behavioral Descriptors series<https://capacity.childwelfare.gov/states/focus-areas/child-protection/buzzwords/?utm_source=january29&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=buzzwords&utm_content=buzzwords> are designed to help child welfare staff recognize buzzwords and increase awareness about the impact of using subjective language in casework.
Translating buzzwords into objective, behavior-based language can help agencies obtain additional information about a family's circumstances and result in improved individualized service delivery. The Buzzwords series provides support for child welfare professionals in redirecting negative, subjective words into more descriptive, objective language that can lead to better outcomes.
