Review: Information on Safe Sleep and Air Mattresses
Dear partners,
I wanted to pass on some information related to air mattresses and sleep-related deaths.
Drs. Jennifer Doering and Trina Salm Ward from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee wanted to share some information about what they see as a possible increased use of air mattresses for primary sleep surfaces, which poses serious risk for infants who may sleep on them. The abstract of their article in the American Journal of Public Health is available below, and a link to a recent blog post about the article's findings is available here<https://www.publichealthpost.org/research/air-mattresses-infant-deaths/>.
If you'd like a copy of the full article, please contact them directly at doering at uwm.edu<mailto:doering at uwm.edu> or salmward at uwm.edu<mailto:salmward at uwm.edu>.
The Interface Among Poverty, Air Mattress Industry Trends, Policy, and Infant Safety
Abstract:
Infants can suffocate on air mattresses, even when the mattress is fully inflated. The interfacing issues of poverty, the bedbug epidemic, and changes in the design and marketing of air mattresses may be increasing consumer use of air mattresses as primary sleep environments and thus increasing the potential for infant death. Despite recent changes to improve air mattress safety labeling, the National Child Death Review Case Reporting System found that between 2004 and 2015 across 24 states, an air mattress was the incident sleep place for 108 infants whose deaths were either during sleep or in a sleep environment. At the same time, design components such as inflatable headboards and memory foam pillow tops potentially increase the hazard to infants, and marketing changes represent air mattresses as a preferred low-cost primary sleep environment. Analysis of current data surveillance systems, published position statements, and consumer materials from national organizations and federal agencies reveal opportunities for changing policy to better protect infants from this hazard. January is Human Trafficking Month
Children involved with child welfare are at heightened risk of becoming victims of sex and labor trafficking. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/23899/2/> (NCMEC) reports that during 2016, 86 percent of child sex trafficking victims reported to NCMEC were in the care of social services or foster care when they went missing.
During Human Trafficking Prevention Month in January, access Information Gateway's suite of trafficking-related resources to help identify potential victims and prevent their exploitation:
* Human Trafficking and Child Welfare: A Guide for Child Welfare Agencies<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/30070/4/> explores how child welfare agencies can support victimized children and youth as well as prevent victimization of those most at risk for future exploitation.
* Human Trafficking and Child Welfare: A Guide for Caseworkers<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/30071/7/> provides background information for caseworkers, specific strategies they can use in identifying and supporting victims, and tools and resources that will help them in this work.
* A human trafficking web section<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/12205/13/> looks at the intersection of human trafficking and child welfare.
* A podcast<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/34165/31/> that explores a Children's Bureau grantee project involving over 10 government and community agencies in a collaborative approach to identifying minors who are, or who are at risk of becoming, victims of human trafficking.
Victim services advocates will find trainings and resources on the websites of The Office of Trafficking in Persons (OTIP)<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/34166/32/> and The Office of Victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/5288/33/>, including:
* An updated factsheet on human trafficking<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/34167/34/>
* A toolkit for Native American youth on human trafficking<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/34168/35/>
The National Human Trafficking Hotline<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/337546/3330783/34169/36/> is operated 24/7, 365 days a year to serve victims and survivors of trafficking.
