Anne Seymour’s Monday Missives

v Don’t miss the free Virtual Institute of the Center for Victim Research, which will be LIVE the week of August 5 – 9. The week kicks off with a session by Dr. Dean Kilpatrick and Dr. Connie Best: Adverse Events, Traumatic Events, Crime Victims, and Health: What Everyone Should Know: There is substantial evidence that adverse childhood experiences can increase risk of subsequent health risk behaviors, mental and physical health problems, and criminal victimization. Increased knowledge of this information can help those who work with victims understand key aspects of victim’s behavior that are otherwise inexplicable, that contribute to victim blame, that hinder the ability to obtain victim cooperation, and that make it more difficult to successfully investigate and prosecute cases. This webinar is designed to address this issue by: 1) reviewing key findings of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study and other research demonstrating a link between childhood adversity and a host of negative outcomes among adults; 2) describing relevance of these findings for improving understanding of victims’ behavior in complex cases, reducing victim blame, improving investigation and prosecution of crimes involving “ difficult” victims with behavioral health, substance use, and re-victimization problems; and 3) identifying practical ways to assist crime victims with adverse childhood experiences- related problems to get the help they need. More information about sessions, speakers, and other activities, plus a link to register, can be found at https://bit.ly/CVR-VI. I’ll be joining this Institute, and encourage all MMMers to join us for some great training!

Screening Youth for Suicide Risk
Tuesday, July 30, 2019
3:00 - 4:00 pm ET

The suicide rate among U.S. youth and young adults, ages 10 to 24, has risen in recent years, increasing by nearly 50 percent between 2007 and 2017, and reaching its highest point since 2000 according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2017, 6769 suicides occurred among youth and young adults ages 10 to 24 years, of which 5375 were male and 1394 were female. (1,2) Early detection of suicide risk through screening is an important method of identifying those at risk. Research-based screening and assessment tools are available for use in multiple settings.

In this webinar, Dr. Lisa Horowitz of the National Institute of Mental Health, and Dr. Jeff Bridge of Nationwide Children’s Hospital will provide background data on suicide and suicidal behavior among youth and young adults and discuss suicide prevention research in screening in both medical and school settings. Turning suicide prevention research into real-world adaptations of sustainable programs is challenging, but lessons learned from real-world adaptations can inform more effective suicide prevention strategies in multiple settings. Dr. Horowitz will present on the ASQ (Ask Suicide-Screening Questions) tool developed to help clinicians ask patients directly about suicidal ideation and behavior. She will describe a 3-tiered clinical pathway for implementing suicide risk screening in all medical settings including emergency departments, Inpatient medical/surgical units and outpatient primary care settings. School systems are also critical venues to identify and intervene upon youth at risk. Sustainable models of school-based suicide prevention programs are necessary for individual schools and the surrounding communities that may suffer from limited resources. Dr. Bridge will discuss implementations of the Signs of Suicide (SOS) program, which was designed to help schools utilize community partnerships while implementing critical best-practice features of gatekeeper training, peer-to-peer support, and universal suicide risk assessment.

Webinar To Discuss the Developmentally Informed and Trauma-Informed Police Officer

Date: Tuesday, July 30, 2019[https://files.constantcontact.com/641149b7201/6ef0d242-ea6b-42bb-9ce0-61556dcb212d.png]
 Time: 1-2 p.m. ET
Description: Police officers are not social workers or psychologists, nor should they be expected to take on these roles. Still, law enforcement professionals have daily interactions with vulnerable children and families and officers can perform in their professional roles more effectively when they are grounded with knowledge about human development. In this webinar, presenters will offer key information about typical development, coupled with information about signs/symptoms of acute traumatic exposure and strategies for officers to intervene effectively on-scene.
