The New Child Maltreatment Report Is Now Available

To make a difference in preventing child abuse and neglect, we need to know what kind of maltreatment is occurring in the United States and to what extent.

The Child Maltreatment Report 2018<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__lists.icfwebservices.com_t_471049_4182309_49719_2_&d=DwMFAw&c=7gilq_oJKU2hnacFUWFTuYqjMQ111TRstgx6WoATdXo&r=EhCMCMLBJCEiaBIcjg19rrZiFit5o0aCt3xQPWV-Ers&m=vZ5eXNZiAD_bJbwCM5OR6xL7oR9QfXj-5IyXTL7EpE0&s=3JBuE-Kyri-NODwvqDJ_Besma3Ndn6dGNrBwznZh4OQ&e=> is the most recent collection of child maltreatment data from across the country. Since 1991, this important resource breaks down the data at the national and state levels and shows trends in data.

Here are the key findings from the 2018 report:

  *   The national rounded number of children who received a child protective services investigation response or alternative response increased 8.4 percent, from 3,261,000 in 2014 to 3,534,000 in 2018.

  *   The number and rate of victims have fluctuated during the past 5 years. There was an increase of 0.4 percent in the national rounded number of victims, from 675,000 in 2014 to 678,000 in 2018.

  *   The 2018 data show more than four-fifths of victims suffered a single type of maltreatment. Sixty percent were neglected only, 10.7 percent were physically abused only, and 7 percent were sexually abused only. More than 15 percent were victims of two or more maltreatment types.

  *   For 2018, an estimated 1,770 children died of abuse and neglect at a rate of 2.39 per 100,000 children in the national population.

Oregon State Victim Assistance Academy
We are excited to announce that registration is available for upcoming sessions of the Oregon State Victim Assistance Academy (SVAA)'s Basic Academy! Each Basic Academy begins with four mandatory pre-Academy distance learning sessions that all participants must complete, along with four in-person, day-long sessions.  We are excited to announce that we will host 3 Basic Academies during 2020 - Winter, Spring & Summer.  By hosting three and announcing all of them now we are hopeful that each member of our advocacy community can find a date and location match!
We are now accepting registrations for the next two Basic Academies, which will be offered in Portland (Winter) Salem (Spring)!  Registration for the third Basic Academy in Bend (Summer) is anticipated to open later this month, and we will send a separate email once that details for the Bend training are finalized.
Winter Basic Academy in Portland, Oregon
The pre-Academy, required distance learning sessions will be held on Monday, Jan 27th; Monday Feb. 3rd; Monday, Feb 10th; and Tuesday, February 18th (flexible times available).  The mandatory in-person training dates for the Salem session will be Monday, February 24th - Thursday, February 27th (from 8am-5pm each day), in the Tilikum Room at the Portland Legal Building. To serve crime victims more effectively, victim service organizations must use fundamental financial management practices to stay solvent and operate properly.

In the Financial Management training, you will learn key bookkeeping and accounting principles, how to prepare financial documents, how to prevent fraud, and the differences in available financial management tools.
This training is designed for those responsible for their organization's financial management. It will be delivered online, over the course of 6 weeks, beginning on January 27, 2020. Each week, except for the introductory week, will include a facilitated webinar. Additionally, there are recommended readings and videos as well as written assignments. You should expect to spend about an hour per week on these in addition to attending the 75 minute webinar. CEUs will be awarded for those who complete all requirements. Mark Fero
Ruther Glen, Virginia

Mark Fero currently serves as the grants compliance supervisor for Virginia's State Administering Agency at the Department of Criminal Justice Services. Previously, he served as the programs administration manager in the Executive and Administration Division for the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia where he provided program and financial oversight to federal- and state-funded grant programs. In 2017, he was re-certified as a Virginia Contracts Associate (VCA). He serves on the Governor's Advisory Board on Volunteerism and National Service, is the chair of the Richmond Police Foundation Board, and the chair for the Virginia Service Foundation. He is also the president of Fero Enterprises LLC, a consulting company whose primary focus is program and financial development for nonprofit, public, and privately run organizations. Mr. Fero was a finance specialist in the Army Honor Guard, 3rd U.S. Infantry ("The Old Guard" escort to the President), and has a B.A. in Behavioral and Social Science from the University of Maryland.

Laney Gibbes
Denver, Colorado

Laney Gibbes is a local, state, and national consultant with more than 27 years of experience in the field of victim services. She has assisted communities in developing, implementing, and sustaining prevention, intervention, and treatment programming to address domestic and sexual violence and other victim issues. She provided financial management to numerous nonprofits in Colorado, including the Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Advocates, the Boys and Girls Club, and Bridge Emergency Shelter. Ms. Gibbes also taught the Nonprofit Financial Management and Fundraising class in the master's program of Social Work at the University of Denver as adjunct faculty. She developed the training content for the NVAA Effective Management Series: Financial Management training. She holds an M.S.W. with a focus on Management and Administration from the University of Denver, a B.S. in Biology from Davidson College, and is a licensed clinical social worker.

KIDS Center: Bilingual Prevention Specialist
Position is full-time with an excellent benefit package. This position is based out of the KIDS Center office in Bend, and includes traveling to Jefferson County and Crook County based on community and agency need with an priority on holding office hours in Jefferson County.  This position will include promoting and conducting all of KIDS Center's prevention programs and trainings, data collection and entry, and outreach to rural communities to educate about KIDS Center and child abuse prevention.
