The Western Regional Children's Advocacy Center is currently accepting applications through March 17, 2020 for our upcoming regional training: Leading Engaged Teams.

May 5 - 7, 2020 | Denver, CO

This training is designed for children's advocacy center staff or team members responsible for coordination/leadership of the CAC's multidisciplinary team (MDT) who wish to enhance their skills as facilitators and leaders and improve ongoing team communication, accountability and relationships.

This training will provide both a grounding philosophy and an intensive skill-building experience that will result in stronger teams and better outcomes for children and families impacted by abuse.

This training is limited to 25 participants and, due to high demand, only one individual from each CAC may apply. Participants must attend the training in its entirety.

WRCAC is pleased to release Role of the Victim Advocate in collaboration with our partners at the Northeast Regional Children's Advocacy Center. This video discusses the vital role victim advocates play on the multidisciplinary team (MDT). MDTs can use this video as a training and orientation tool for both incoming and current MDT members.

The Regional Children's Advocacy Centers have also published Victim Advocacy Guidelines that can be used in conjunction with this video.

The service is staffed by certified family support specialists who have training and personal experience in parenting children with emotional, developmental or physical health concerns.

The website and the Family Support Specialists provide information about accessing local resources, including support groups and local Family Support Specialists. Parents and caregivers can get assistance with navigating the complex and complicated system of services, day-to-day practical tools for parenting children with challenging behaviors or issues, and just plain support and understanding from someone who “has been there.”

The service is a resource after a crisis and when parents and caregivers need practical ideas about handling stress and frustration, how to talk to siblings and other adults about the needs of their child, or how to adapt their communication and parenting style to advocate for their family's needs.

The New Child Maltreatment Report Is Now Available

To make a difference in preventing child abuse and neglect, we need to know what kind of maltreatment is occurring in the United States and to what extent.

The Child Maltreatment Report 2018<https://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/471045/3684339/49719/2/> is the most recent collection of child maltreatment data from across the country. Since 1991, this important resource breaks down the data at the national and state levels and shows trends in data.

Here are the key findings from the 2018 report:

  *   The national rounded number of children who received a child protective services investigation response or alternative response increased 8.4 percent, from 3,261,000 in 2014 to 3,534,000 in 2018.

  *   The number and rate of victims have fluctuated during the past 5 years. There was an increase of 0.4 percent in the national rounded number of victims, from 675,000 in 2014 to 678,000 in 2018.

  *   The 2018 data show more than four-fifths of victims suffered a single type of maltreatment. Sixty percent were neglected only, 10.7 percent were physically abused only, and 7 percent were sexually abused only. More than 15 percent were victims of two or more maltreatment types.

  *   For 2018, an estimated 1,770 children died of abuse and neglect at a rate of 2.39 per 100,000 children in the national population.

Upcoming Trainings

Intended participants: Victim advocates working in system- and community-based agencies, including child abuse assessment centers, as well as allied professionals working with crime victims. Preference will be given to these individuals.

Introduction to Oregon’s Crime Victims' Compensation Program Training: Learn more about Oregon’s Crime Victims’ Compensation Program (CVCP). The CVCP works to ease the financial burden suffered by hundreds of Oregonians each year as a result of violent person crimes. This training includes information about program eligibility and benefits, the application process and how payments are handled. Participants will be introduced to the CVCP Client Portal with instructions on how to register, submit an application and upload documents.
