A Child Should Be (Seen and) Heard: Representing Minor Victims of Sexual Violence

How do we seek justice for a client whose competency is questioned from the beginning? Due to their vulnerability, children have special rights in legal proceedings. In addition to discussing child sexual abuse myths and facts, this training will focus on a minor victim's rights in connection to reporting abuse; their therapeutic and medical records; privilege; their status as crime victims; and other legal remedies.

Dear colleagues, partners, and neighbors across Oregon,

Trauma Informed Oregon (TIO) is OPEN—don’t worry, not physically open. We are absolutely following physical distancing to flatten the curve, to protect others, and to respect the great sacrifices that so many are making. We have been in touch with many groups on their thinking about Coronavirus and COVID-19 responses through a trauma-informed (TI) lens and how this is happening across sectors and regions in the state.

We do this work by centering diversity, equity, and inclusion knowing that although we are all experiencing this, the impact and needs will be different across communities.

I am focused on how

  *   we maintain social connection as this is a significant buffer to toxic stress,
  *   we think about the immediate needs but also the long-term needs of this event,
  *   we support those for whom there is no house or their home is not safe,
  *   we can support leaders to best support staff and communities.

More than anything I am focused on how Trauma Informed Oregon can be supportive to you.

Ways We Can Support You

  1.  Address your questions about trauma informed approaches and COVID-19 responses. Seriously, ask us any questions. How do I talk to my kids about this? How do I connect with my 80-year-old aunt in a different state? How do I monitor my staff’s coping remotely? How do I communicate to staff in a way that doesn’t overwhelm them?
  2.  Track down resources. Do you need a TIP sheet or have ideas about something specific? Let us know and we will work on it. I need a script for telling staff about the change in command. I need a tip sheet to give teachers about how and why they need to be in touch with students. I need a tip sheet on safe technology to connect youth. I need messaging in Spanish.
  3.  Highlight the TI work you are doing. Do you have something good you’d like to share? Rural strategies? School-based strategies? Peer support? If something is working, let us know and we can share with others. It is an active learning experience!

What We're Working On

Updates from Anne Seymour
Healing Justice has launched Post Conviction Survivor Resources, a new website<https://healingjusticeproject.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08e4b0e5290b16f09dfa77f3f&id=a1aa4155cc&e=1ee429621c> funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime. This new website offers practical tools<https://healingjusticeproject.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08e4b0e5290b16f09dfa77f3f&id=43f3326fab&e=1ee429621c> to victim service providers, prosecutors, police, and other justice professionals for assisting crime victims in cases involving post-conviction claims of innocence and exonerations. On the site, practitioners can learn how to:

  *   Mitigate the emotional distress experienced by victims post-conviction.
  *   Provide victims with respect, agency, and choice.
  *   Ensure victims’ safety and security.
  *   Regain victims’ trust in the criminal justice system.
  *   Engage victims in future proceedings.
In addition to these critical new resources for the field, the website presents a special collection of peer-to-peer videos<https://healingjusticeproject.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08e4b0e5290b16f09dfa77f3f&id=703e3c64d5&e=1ee429621c> for crime victims, each of which provides a personal, intimate look at the experiences and needs of victims in these cases. Role of the Victim Advocate
VIDEO RELEASE
WRCAC is pleased to release Role of the Victim Advocate in collaboration with our partners at the Northeast Regional Children's Advocacy Center. This video discusses the vital role victim advocates play on the multidisciplinary team (MDT). MDTs can use this video as a training and orientation tool for both incoming and current MDT members.

The Regional Children's Advocacy Centers have also published Victim Advocacy Guidelines that can be used in conjunction with this video.

The service is staffed by certified family support specialists who have training and personal experience in parenting children with emotional, developmental or physical health concerns.

The website and the Family Support Specialists provide information about accessing local resources, including support groups and local Family Support Specialists. Parents and caregivers can get assistance with navigating the complex and complicated system of services, day-to-day practical tools for parenting children with challenging behaviors or issues, and just plain support and understanding from someone who “has been there.”

The service is a resource after a crisis and when parents and caregivers need practical ideas about handling stress and frustration, how to talk to siblings and other adults about the needs of their child, or how to adapt their communication and parenting style to advocate for their family's needs.

 Crime Victims’ Compensation (CVCP)
Upcoming Trainings

Intended participants: Victim advocates working in system- and community-based agencies, including child abuse assessment centers, as well as allied professionals working with crime victims. Preference will be given to these individuals.

Introduction to Oregon’s Crime Victims' Compensation Program Training: Learn more about Oregon’s Crime Victims’ Compensation Program (CVCP). The CVCP works to ease the financial burden suffered by hundreds of Oregonians each year as a result of violent person crimes. This training includes information about program eligibility and benefits, the application process and how payments are handled. Participants will be introduced to the CVCP Client Portal with instructions on how to register, submit an application and upload documents.
