This National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Practice Prevention With Purpose

 Dear Colleague,

This April, I invite you to participate in the National Child Abuse Prevention Month<https://www.childwelfare.gov/topics/preventing/preventionmonth/?utm_campaign=ncapm21&utm_medium=email&utm_source=ncapmlaunch040121> campaign.

We work all year to protect children and families and ensure their well-being, but this month, we can use this extra attention to move away from simply calling for awareness and redirect the focus to active change.

This year's theme, "Thriving Children and Families: Prevention With Purpose," shows the Children’s Bureau’s commitment to changing the conversation from one of raising awareness to purposeful action to prevent maltreatment by treating the root causes.

Free Online Workshop: “Handling Disclosures in a Trauma-Informed Way in Online Sexual Violence Prevention Environments During COVID-19” will take place on Tuesday, April 13 at 2:00 pm EST. “Concerns about participant safety persist after one-year and climbing of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sexual violence preventionists often face participants and youth disclosing their own experiences with violence in prevention spaces. Responding in a trauma-informed way is essential, and doing so in online and remote environments can pose additional challenges. It’s also critical for preventionists to understand both their roles as mandated reporters of youth violence and/or responsible employees of college and university students, and how these laws and policies have a disproportionate harmful impact on marginalized communities. Implementing Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
for Preschool and School-age Children with Problematic Sexual
Behaviors (PSB) Related to Trauma
This advanced TF-CBT training aims to increase and enhance participants' understanding of PSB in children 12 years and younger. The training is comprised of pre-work, 1.5 days virtual training, and 6 monthly group consultation calls with relevant handouts and training materials. Training also includes a senior leader webinar and implementation group senior leader consultation call. The training and consultation will be conducted by a TF-CBT Trainer and a Problematic Sexual Behavior - Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (PSB-CBT) Trainer.

Suicide Prevention and Intervention for Victim Advocates: The EDC H.O.P.E. Curriculum Webinar with OVC TTAC

April 14, 2021 | 1:00–3:00 p.m. Eastern Time

Please join us on Wednesday, March 17, or Wednesday, April 14, 2021, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. eastern time, for a webinar hosted by the Office for Victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center (OVC TTAC) on Suicide Prevention and Intervention for Victim Advocates: The EDC H.O.P.E. Curriculum. This webinar will provide an overview of the importance of suicide prevention activities within victim services and introduce the EDC H.O.P.E. handbook. The handbook is an important resource for advocates, and it includes a guide designed for those working in tribal communities specifically. The webinar will demonstrate tools to prepare crime victim advocates to identify victims who are exhibiting symptoms of suicidality, present how to do a brief intervention and where to make referrals for clinical mental health services, and share how to provide ongoing support to victims. This webinar was first presented in fall 2020.
