Building Resilient Teams
APPLY BY MARCH 5, 2021
WRCAC is now accepting applications for Building Resilient Teams, an online guided discussion group designed to build resiliency within the MDT.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The topic of vicarious trauma and resiliency is one that most professionals in this field agree impacts our work; however, because of the nature of our work and the overwhelming complexity of the issue, it often gets pushed to the bottom of our priority list. The health of the MDT directly impacts the services it is able to provide to children and families. A healthy MDT is one that acknowledges and addresses the impact of vicarious trauma and actively works to build resiliency.
This group will promote resilience and provide an opportunity for participants to return to their MDT with strategies, resources, and an action plan for building resiliency within their own teams. For each cohort, WRCAC will select up to eighteen two-member teams representing MDTs from throughout the western region.
PROJECT DETAILS
This group will meet twice a month for seven sessions via Zoom. The time commitment per month is estimated at 4 hours, which includes 15 to 30 minutes of pre-meeting work and an hour and 15 minutes for each session. For individual benefit, as well as the benefit of the entire group, participants are strongly encouraged to participate in all seven sessions.
Building Resilient Teams is being offered in two cohorts. A third cohort may be added later in 2021. Participants will indicate their availability and cohort preference when applying.
[A picture containing text, person, player, female Description automatically generated]
Because participants will be returning to their individual MDTs with resources and action plans, it is required that one participant from each team carry be in a "leadership" role, typically defined as coordinator or facilitator of the MDT. All disciplines are encouraged to apply in order for well-rounded discussion within the group.
There is no cost to participate in the project.

While Americans agree that child abuse and neglect is unacceptable and are more likely than ever to consider child development an important policy issue, it can be difficult to build the public understanding and policy we will need to effectively prevent, identify, and address childhood adversity. As communicators, we still encounter persistent dilemmas in deciding what to say, how to say it, and what to leave unsaid.
Understanding the need for fresh, powerful framing strategies, Prevent Child Abuse America (PCA America) and the newly merged Alliance for Strong Families and Communities and Council on Accreditation asked theFrameWorks Institute to update framing recommendations that have served our field well since 2004. The result is a new strategic brief, ReframingChildhood Adversity: Promoting Upstream Approaches<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Falliance1.org%2Fweb%2Fnews%2F2021%2Ffeb%2Fnew-webinar-how-communicate-child-adversity-build-understanding.aspx&data=04%7C01%7Cacollier%40mphi.org%7C8ace4bf4f93240a579aa08d8d9966c9a%7Ca4405b416d4f4d5190dd22ba251725f5%7C0%7C0%7C637498587415239499%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=DfvV%2BjBjghcI327gVSRWuwhKKxGsamZ5ke3zatAxjp8%3D&reserved=0>. This highly accessible, actionable guide takes recent science and current communications contexts into account, speaks more directly to racial and social justice, and aligns with efforts to reimaginechild welfare systems into child well-being systems. The brief also offers guidance for communicating about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and strategies for helping the public to see how prevention works.
Join Dr. Julie Sweetland, senior advisor at the FrameWorks Institute, for a guided tour of this timely, powerful new guidance. Since joining FrameWorks in 2012, Dr. Sweetland has led reframing initiatives on issues like human services,health equity, and two-generation approaches to family well-being. Her strategic insight has helped leading advocates, policymakers, and scientists frame their issues in ways that drive change. Dr. Sweetland began her career as a classroom teacher and is deeplycommitted to building a world that brings out the full potential of children.

Amy

What is "Cultivating the Role of Team Facilitator"?
This training is intended to support current facilitators and their managers in understanding, developing, and sustaining the role of a team facilitator. Participants will explore the intricacies of the position and learn how to make it a valuable asset to any MDT.
This training was offered virtually in 2020 and recorded with a live audience. The resulting recording has been modified and edited to now be viewed as a self-paced virtual training.
Who is this course designed for?
This training is designed for new and existing MDT facilitators, as well as CAC leaders looking to grow this role. Ideally, team facilitators will participate in this training with their managers/directors as the information is relevant for both. But anyone who is interested in cultivating this role within their organization is encouraged to participate.
What's the format?
This training is comprised of 10 consecutive modules and corresponding resources. Each module must be completed before the next becomes available. Participants can re-watch previous modules.
How do I access it?
Access to the NCAC's Virtual Training Center (VTC) is free for CACs, though you will need to create an account if you do not have one already.

AND Virtually in the Comfort of Your Home or Office
Denver, Colorado
August 13-17, 2021
The National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC) is accepting abstract submissions now through March 1, 2021 (firm deadline) for our 44th National Child Welfare Law Conference.
The theme of this year's conference is From Crisis to Innovation: Toward a Family-Centered Justice System. The conference will highlight and elevate the voices of those individuals most impacted by the child welfare and delinquency systems, including youth and parents with lived expertise and those disproportionately impacted by systems involvement, particularly Black and Indigenous families.
NACC will host the conference in a dual-format: in-person at the Denver Hyatt Regency and virtually online. We very much look forward to seeing you in-person, but if it is not possible to gather in-person, the conference will be held entirely online. For this reason, NACC is seeking abstract submissions from presenters willing to present live: in-person, virtually, or in either format.
Conference sessions should be designed for a national audience, expand attendees' understanding of the law, provide practical tools and resources to support legal advocacy, and provide information and strategies for systems improvement. Specific topics of interest include:
* Prevention, early intervention, and keeping children in families, family settings, and with siblings
* Authentic youth engagement (engaging youth both inside and outside of the courtroom)
* Ethics (including conflicts, confidentiality, and privilege)
* Major federal legislation impacting child welfare and juvenile justice, such as the Family First Act
* Cross-sector presentations that address the intersections of child welfare, juvenile justice, criminal justice, poverty, and/or homelessness
* Immigration and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status
* Racial and ethnic disparities, implicit bias, and structural racism
* LGBTQIA youth and related topics, including religious freedom/faith-based LGBTQIA advocacy
* Policing, criminal justice, and child welfare
* Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC)
* Trial skills
* Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children
* Substance use disorders, mental health, and co-occurring diagnoses
* Trauma-informed treatment and trauma-sensitive courtrooms/offices/practices
* Indian Child Welfare Act
* Innovative legal service delivery systems, multidisciplinary practice, and law office management
* Diversity and inclusion in the legal profession
* Policy advocacy (specific reforms and skill-building)
* Sessions geared toward Colorado practitioners (based on Colorado law and practice)
NACC strongly encourages and will evaluate diversity in abstract submissions, which includes diversity in faculty, topic areas, and geographic representation. NACC also encourages multidisciplinary faculty panels, presentations that include youth and parents formerly involved in the child welfare system, and presentations by Child Welfare Law Specialists. Each abstract submission must include:
* a description of how the session will address or impact racial equity, disparity, or underserved populations; and
* how the voices and recommendations of individuals with lived expertise will inform or be integrated into the session.
Conference faculty (up to two presenters per session) receive free conference registration. All faculty must pay for their own travel and accommodations. For more information about the abstract process contact Kristen.pisani-jacques at naccchildlaw.org<mailto:Kristen.pisani-jacques at naccchildlaw.org> All applicants will be notified of NACC's selection decisions by the end of April.
