Talk about it. All of it.
[A person wearing glasses and a purple shirt Description automatically generated]<https://www.nationalchildrensalliance.org/>Welcome to March—internet safety month for us at National Children’s Alliance (NCA)! Did you know that the first-ever telephone call and the first-ever tweet both went out in March? Communication has come a long way since the advent of the telephone, and even since Twitter—now X—was launched. In some ways, it is a marvel. It has made the world a global community, and access is easier and more available than it has ever been.

That’s both a benefit and a detriment, of course. For the most vulnerable among us, especially our children, the risk of being victimized is greater now than ever before. Indeed, recent research by Dr. David Finkelhor and his co-authors demonstrates that when online sexual abuse is included in child sexual abuse prevalence rates, those rates increase sharply and dramatically, especially for girls. Overall, when including online sexual abuse, prevalence rates for child sexual abuse increase to about 1 in 5 children. And slightly under one-third of girls in the study reported experiencing sexual abuse when including online sexual abuse offenses.

And it is increasingly complicated. It used to be enough to tell parents to “put the computer in the family room and keep an eye on your child’s online activities,” but now that advice is simply not enough. What’s a parent to do? And how do we, as child abuse prevention and intervention professionals, help them?

Certainly, asking Congress to hold tech companies responsible for developing and implementing better and easier default safety controls for youth is one important step. However, I think that the key for parents lies in the same principles that guide our work every day: robust and open communication that normalizes and destigmatizes the topics that are hardest to talk about under the best of circumstances, so that it’s easier when the circumstances are less than ideal.

To put it simply, talking about it. All of it. About internet safety and appropriate boundaries and requests that cross those boundaries, even (and especially) when they come from someone the child knows. Conversations about what to do if a child feels unsafe—online or otherwise—and a plan for who the child can alert if a situation gets out of control. Partners like the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC<https://nationalchildrensalliance.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f0eed4a49578b60fdd38f4745&id=fc47961a99&e=e91a1a05e4>) and the National Criminal Justice Training Center (NCJTC<https://nationalchildrensalliance.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f0eed4a49578b60fdd38f4745&id=6d3324afdc&e=e91a1a05e4>) have developed videos and other materials that can be very useful in helping children and youth understand risks and boundaries. NCMEC has a wealth of resources for children and caregivers alike on its NetSmartz<https://nationalchildrensalliance.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f0eed4a49578b60fdd38f4745&id=8ff500250e&e=e91a1a05e4> hub. NCJTC offers excellent training<https://nationalchildrensalliance.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f0eed4a49578b60fdd38f4745&id=423622646a&e=e91a1a05e4> for professionals working to engage with their communities to provide information about internet privacy and security.

So let’s work together to make March a month that celebrates and promotes more than communication at its most basic level—let’s make it a month that celebrates and promotes communication about safety, so our kids can live their lives, online and off, without fear or harm.

Warmly,
Teresa
