Promoting Prevention. Committed to Wellness.

2025 | Winter Issue

Welcome to Trauma Informed Oregon Talk, our e-newsletter! Learn the latest news from Trauma Informed Oregon (TIO)<https://4et16.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/sh/SMK1E8tHeG7uft7Vv1ZP4ei61G0Q/6ntGp7by79p8>, read essays from the TIO community, discover trauma informed activities across the state, and start using trauma informed tools and resources we have learned about or added to our website.

Note from Mandy, Director of TIO

This was intended to be a January New Year’s newsletter, but it is actually being sent in February. Though staff had their parts completed months ago, I was behind. Then the last few months have made it hard to sit and focus on writing a bit for the newsletter. I share this because disruption seems to be both constant and unpredictable at the same time, similar to how I describe TI practices as both consistent and flexible. So the topics in this newsletter may be validating, may feel distant or trivial, or may be a helpful distraction. We continue our mission to work “in partnership with providers, individuals with lived experience, and families to promote and sustain trauma informed policies and practices across physical, mental, and behavioral health systems and to disseminate promising strategies to support wellness and resilience.”

I am deeply grateful to be able to gather with many of you over this past year and in the months to come. The amazing work so many of you are doing in and for communities gives me that polyvagal nerve glimmer ;). TIO is here to partner, support, learn from, and just hold space as we navigate these times. Connection, community, care, and dignity are words top of mind for me these days – please let us know how we can partner on any of these needed practices<https://4et16.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/sh/SMK1E8tHeGEm81wT6BitAU0pzYag/zJW11rLHW0ii>.

Now… the newsletter. We are focusing this one on the Essential Element<https://4et16.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/sh/SMK1E8tHeGLdaAlQHLsNGJJZxrAw/LaHsohBLBGMc>: Organizational Commitment. I start by sharing a few themes from this past year, followed by fabulous blogs from TIO staff related to organizational commitment, and then a list of what we have been up to and what is upcoming.

We are grateful for you. Please let us know how we can support you.

by Steffannie Roaché, MS LPC, Assistant Professor of Practice, Trauma Informed Oregon

No matter how chill we are, things outside of our control can happen and cause overwhelming tension and stress. But then we can leverage our parasympathetic nervous system to regain that sense of calm and balance. Here is a technique to lean on that helps us soothe ourselves.

Moving Beyond Tolerance to Genuine Connections in the Workplace

by Steffannie Roaché, MS LPC, Assistant Professor of Practice, Trauma Informed Oregon

Throughout history, the concept of “tolerance” was highly valued. During the crux of the Civil Rights Movement, tolerance acted as a bridge to deeper understanding among communities. However, we now understand that mere tolerance falls short of achieving true equity and justice.

From Survival to Well-Being at Work (and Maslow Too!)

by Steffannie Roaché, MS LPC, Assistant Professor of Practice, Trauma Informed Oregon

Maslow said we move through a hierarchy of needs from basic survival to higher goals like social connection, esteem, and self-actualization. How can Maslow’s hierarchy inform organizational practices to shift from surviving to thriving in the workplace?

Hello Valued Application Assistants!
We appreciate everything you do to support our Address Confidentiality Program participants. Some things have come up repeatedly, so here are some reminders.

  * Remember to check the My Vote website<https://secure.sos.state.or.us/orestar/vr/showVoterSearch.do;JSESSIONID_ORESTAR=CkWixZY4j1Qc6jKRPaRCY31_HMAZn72oUfVuMBX3V1koPbxZxxMw!-474749658> to be sure the participant addresses are not listed before helping them apply for the program.
  * If you do find their address, please help them fill out the SEL550 Form<https://sos.oregon.gov/elections/Documents/SEL550.pdf>, which is then to be mailed to their local county elections office address.

SVAA: Feedback Requested

NCVLI is collaborating with the Oregon Department of Justice's Crime Victim and Survivors Services Division<https://www.doj.state.or.us/crime-victims/>, and Portland State's Trauma Informed Oregon<https://traumainformedoregon.org/>, to envision the future of foundational victim advocacy training in Oregon, including the Basic State Victim Assistance Academy (SVAA). This could result in a major overhaul of the SVAA or tinkering around the edges - the key is to determine what would serve the community best and then do that!

This means WE NEED YOUR INPUT. There are primary ways to provide input:

(1) take the time to complete this questionnaire<https://portlandstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3fSSLni4S85Ynlk>, which should take you approximately 10 minutes; and/or

(2) participate in one of three listening sessions during which we will talk through the same topics as the questionnaire by signing up here<https://traumainformedoregon.org/state-victim-assistance-academy-svaa-focus-group-listening-session/>.

We are truly hoping for widespread input so we are disseminating our request broadly. Please consider forwarding this to your colleagues.

Call for OFA Grant Reviewers & New Additions to the Title IV-E Clearinghouse Working List of Programs and Services for Review
________________________________
Call for OFA Grant Reviewers!

The grant application review panel (ARP) is a convening of qualified, independent subject-matter-experts who apply their knowledge and experience in program areas to the evaluation of federal grant applications. ARPs result in evidence-based summations that are used by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) /Office of Family Assistance (OFA) to ensure only the most competitive grant applicants receive federal funding.

OFA is seeking to engage people with lived experience as grant reviewers. People with lived experience have direct personal experience and involvement with ACF programs and/or the societal issues related to ACF services and initiatives. Beyond their professional or educational training, people with lived experience have a valuable form of knowledge based on their perspective, personal identities, and history.

To be selected by OFA to participate in a review, you must fully complete your registration<https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.grantsolutions.gov%2Frrm%2Fagencyportal%2Fofa.aspx%3Futm_medium=email%26utm_source=grantreviewerstitleive012125/2/0100019489c1fb45-1524a16f-c5f1-4b81-aea6-8fa8b6581390-000000/9MSDU-lbzzILw1SKs4tWb2cNHkw1koLKbWjjoAEgo7I=388> in the Reviewer Recruitment Module (RRM).
