BJA, in partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), released a seminal model policy regarding police interaction with children who are impacted when a parent is arrested and law enforcement carries out its investigative and arrest
responsibilities.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p>Reflecting the collective input of a wide range of subject-matter experts and stakeholders, and understanding that interactions between children and law enforcement create lasting impressions, the resulting model policy,
<em>Safeguarding Children of Arrested Parents,</em> provides strategies for law enforcement to improve their procedures and positively impact the communities they serve. “Police officers are confronted with significant challenges and responsibilities when children
are present or in need of care and supervision following the arrest of a parent,” said BJA Director Denise E. O’Donnell. “We are pleased to partner with IACP on a new model policy that provides sound, practical, and child-focused guidance on how police can
join with their community partners to best meet the needs of children in these difficult circumstances.”<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Law enforcement agencies can use the model policy as a resource and guide as they seek to enhance their policies and procedures and gain understanding about the trauma children experience when law enforcement carries out its investigative and arrest responsibilities.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p>Health care professionals frequently come into contact with youth who have past, ongoing, or potential sexual exploitation for commercial purposes or sex trafficking victimization. However, according to the 2013 report from the Institute of Medicine and
National Research Council, Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States, the United States is in the early stages of recognizing, understanding, and developing solutions to prevent these crimes. A new supplement
to the report <i><a href="http://www.iom.edu/sextraffickinghealthcareguide">Guide for the Health Care Sector</a></i> is designed for use by health care professionals and in settings where youth are treated for injury and illness or taught about prevention.
The guide includes key terms, risk factors and consequences, barriers to identifying victims and survivors, current practices, and recommendations. This project was funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
