Good morning and happy Monday. I hope this finds everyone well. This morning, I want to direct your attention to the most recent issue of
Child Maltreatment, Journal of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children
(APSAC). This is a special issue, devoted entirely to articles examining the intersection of child maltreatment and emerging adulthood.

The nature of our work can sometimes narrow our focus to be primarily, and in some cases, exclusively, on younger children. And with as many issues as child victims of abuse face,
that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But the articles in this edition of Child Maltreatment examine issues that children face when they make the transition into adulthood – and those issues unique to victims of child abuse.

One of the articles, entitled “The Role of Ethnicity, Sexual Attitudes and Sexual Behavior in Sexual Revictimization During the
Transition to Emerging Adulthood,” examines the problematic and somewhat controversial issue of revictimization of child sexual abuse victims in adulthood.

Emerging adulthood is defined as being ages 18-25, a time that marks “the critical stage of transition from adolescence to adulthood during which young people develop and crystallize
the skills necessary for successful assumption of adult roles….”
Id., p. 178. But, “[w]hile this developmental period is crucial for the formation of successful adult romantic relationships, it also is a time when women are at particularly high risk for sexual victimization.” Id. Moreover, “[t]here is substantial
empirical evidence that experiencing child sexual abuse (CSA) places women at increased risk of adult sexual assault (ASA).”
Id. And, the authors note, “both CSA and the elevated risk it poses for sexual revictimization are significant public health concerns.”
Id., p. 179.

Although past studies have examined the relationship between CSA and revictimization, the current study “extends previous research by including a wide range of adult sexual victimization
experiences and investigating the role of ethnicity, sexual attitudes, and sexual behaviors in revictimization among college women.”
Id. The researchers note that “[o]ne group that is especially important to investigate is Hispanic women, as Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing minority group in the United States.”
Id.

In looking at sexual attitudes and behaviors, the researchers are careful to note that “[t]his research is not meant, either overtly or covertly, to case any blame on victims who might
possess characteristics empirically linked to revictimization….”
Id. Rather, the study was conducted “with the ultimate aim of informing the science around effective prevention of and intervention following ASA.”
Id.

The current study found that there was a “significant relationship between CSA and severity of ASA, even in the presence of other factors….”
Id., p. 184. The link is “partially explained by the number of lifetime sexual partners, suggesting that while an experience of CSA increases the severity of ASA, this is in part because women who
have experienced CSA are more likely to report having more lifetime sexual partners, and women with more lifetime sexual partners are at higher risk of experiencing more severe ASA.”
Id.

There was also a statistically significant relationship between ethnicity and severity of ASA: “European American women were more likely to experience more severe ASA than Hispanic
women….” Id. The relationship correlated directly to women’s attitudes toward casual sex and number of lifetime partners which, as the authors point out, “is an important finding, as it suggests
that the relationship between ethnicity and severity of ASA is related to potentially modifiable attitudes and behaviors.”
Id. And it is worth noting that, not surprisingly, the study found no correlation between ethnicity and CSA.

The lesson the researchers draw from this study is that it reaffirms “the need to address concerns about adult revictimization in treatment programs targeting victims of CSA.”
Id., p. 185. And again, far from victim-blaming, the researchers point to the data as a way “to help increase the effectiveness of prevention interventions and women’s self-agency….” Id.

If nothing else, this study highlights the continued risk to victims of CSA – a risk that we should acknowledge and address. I urge you to download this study and read it in full,
