The arrival of the New Year and the beginning of the 2015 legislative session provides an opportunity for me to reflect on the year we've just concluded, as well as offer a few thoughts about the year ahead.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:16.0pt;text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:16.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:black">First and foremost, it is a tremendous honor to serve you as Oregon's Attorney General and to work with the more
than 1,300 employees of Oregon's Department of Justice. Like most public servants, DOJ's employees are smart, innovative, hard-working, resilient, and - most of all - genuinely and deeply committed to the betterment of our state. My immediate team in the "AG
office" is fantastic, starting with my Deputy Attorney General, Fred Boss. <o:p>
</o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:16.0pt;text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:16.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:black">I also want to make clear what I believe are the central roles of Oregon's Department of Justice. We exist, first,
to provide legal advice and counsel to the many entities of state government. We do our best to guide your government as it works for you - and to do so in a cost-efficient and practical manner. Our legal divisions, which include General Counsel, Trial, Appellate,
Civil Enforcement and Criminal Justice, handle literally thousands of cases a year. As an example, our Appellate Division, headed by Solicitor General Anna Joyce, defends every single criminal conviction in the state that is appealed to the Oregon Court of
Appeals or the Oregon Supreme Court, and on occasion, the United States Supreme Court. All of our lawyers and legal staff are expected to, and do, provide the "gold standard" of legal service to our clients. In further service to our state clients, we look
forward to hosting a Public Law Conference later this year. Stay tuned! <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:16.0pt;text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:16.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:black">We're also here to advocate for all Oregonians -and to protect our state. That means fighting crime, often in conjunction
with local and federal prosecutors and law enforcement. It means protecting our land, rivers, coast, and air. It also means preventing consumer abuse and providing a fair, stable playing field for Oregon's businesses. I remain especially concerned with the
most vulnerable among us - children, the elderly, and those who are less able than the rest of us to advocate for themselves.
