Dear Business Managers, Superintendents, and Benefits Administrators:
Over the last week OEBB had a report of a person calling a member stating that if the member participated in a survey they would be eligible to win a gift card. The person they called was a PEBB member, not an OEBB member.
OEBB called this number from a state line and was informed by a recording "Congratulations, you have won a $100 Walmart gift card. To receive this gift card you will need to talk with a representative." Then, we were directed to press 1 to connect to a personal representative. Once connected, they hung up on us. We think this is due to calling them on a state line. Later, we called with a personal cell phone and the representative talked with us and stated they wanted us to send them $7.95 for processing the gift card and wanted our personal information. We hung up at that time.
The number they are asking you to call is 1-866-609-1159.
We have notified the Department of Justice group that handles scams of this nature. Please alert your employees of this potential scam and urge them not to participate.
As you know, OEBB is offering a number of $500 gift cards in a drawing of those who complete their online health assessment by May 31, 2014. We want to make sure members do not mistakenly believe these scam artist callers are connected with our legitimate drawing. OEBB is not contacting members by phone and we would never ask a member for any sort of payment or credit card information in order to claim their prize.
Thank you for your assistance in sharing this information with your employees and protecting OEBB members from this scam.
