"Just Say NO”: Assertiveness Skills You Can Share (and Use) with Clients** is a half-day workshop for mental health professionals interested in helping clients (and themselves) to communicate effectively with
authenticity and confidence, even in situations of conflict or uncertainty.

Course Content
Participants will identify their own style of communication before learning and practicing a simple assertiveness technique to share with clients.

We'll compare the elements of assertive behavior with those of other types of communication, and discuss how to incorporate assertiveness training into our work with clients.

Participants will have an opportunity to explore personal assertiveness challenges related to the practice of counseling, such as
dealing with clients who request extra session time or who fail to pay for services.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

• Understand and explain the difference between assertive, aggressive, passive and passive-aggressive communication styles
• Identify their own “go-to” communication style
• Teach clients a simple technique for communicating assertively
• Apply the technique with clients and others who push boundaries
