<BODY style="MARGIN: 4px 4px 1px; FONT: 10pt Tahoma">Over 1.6 million men and women have served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom to date. Almost half of those Service Members are married, and almost half have dependent children--the majority 5 years old and younger. In today’s unique combat situation--where there is no front line and constant vigilance must be maintained on the ground, where individuals are serving as many as four deployments that are longer in duration than in the past, and where Service Members and Families are asked to give more because of our all-volunteer Military…we’re learning that “The wounds of war are not limited to the battlefield.” Due to the significant and increasing demand on the VA, and its current capacity to provide services needed by Service Members and their Families, this situation is swiftly becoming a public health issue. In an effort to address this issue, we are working to raise awareness of the needs of our Service Members and their Families, and help prepare health professionals and others to reach out to our Military and provide the specialized care they need. We encourage you to open the attached Course Instructions to learn how to sign up for and complete one of the online courses relating to Treating the Invisible Wounds of War. This series of courses will enhance your skills and improve your recognition of behavioral health symptoms relating to the multiple deployments of our Service Members and the affect deployments have on their Families. In addition to supporting our mission, those who complete the course will: • receive a poster to display in their offices inviting Service Members and their Families to talk to a health professional about any troubling symptoms, • receive a Certificate of Completion suitable for framing, and • be eligible for 3 contact hours of Continuing Education credit. Please sign up to take a course in the next 20 days or you, will miss out on this opportunity. A follow-up e-mail will be sent out next week. I look forward to hearing from most of you very soon.
