For Immediate Release Friday, October 25, 2002
Temporary closure announced for salmon, steelhead=20
and trout angling in the lower Yachats River
NEWPORT - The lower Yachats River west of Highway 101 will be closed to =
angling for salmon, steelhead and trout from Saturday, Oct. 26, through =
Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002. The western boundary of the closure area is a line =
starting at the westernmost point in Yachats State Park and extending due =
south to the rocky point on the southern shoreline of the cove where the =
Yachats River enters the ocean.=20
The emergency closure is being implemented to help reduce mortality among =
salmon being stranded in shallow pools that form at low tide. The pools =
are isolated from both the ocean and upstream areas. Concentrations of =
adult coho and chinook caught in the pools are extremely vulnerable to =
snagging and harassment.
The Yachats River supports a relatively small run of chinook and coho that =
can sustain only limited harvest. The increased mortality rates incurred =
because of the excessive vulnerability of fish in these pools threatens =
the health of this small run.=20
ODFW currently is assessing the need for additional closures to coastal =
streams on a case-by-case basis. Other closures may be needed due to low =
stream flows caused by continued dry weather. The low stream flows are =
delaying the upstream movement of adult salmon.
