ODFW to Hold Lottery for Commercial Salmon Troll Permits
PORTLAND - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will conduct a lottery in early July to distribute available permits that allow commercial fishers to troll for salmon off the Oregon coast.
The Oregon Legislature in 1995 limited the total number of troll permits for salmon to 1,200 annually to more closely align the fishing effort with the commercial fishing opportunities. The Legislature also authorized ODFW to conduct a lottery to accept new applicants into the industry if the total permits fell below 1,200. In 2002, only 1,175 troll salmon permits were renewed, leaving 25 available.
ODFW will accept troll salmon permit applications through June and conduct the lottery in early July. All applications must be postmarked or delivered to the ODFW Licensing Section in the Portland headquarters office by June 30. The annual fee for the permit is $75 and requires purchase of a commercial boat license at a cost of $200 for Oregon residents and $400 for nonresidents.
Troll salmon permit applications are available at the ODFW Portland office and at ODFW Marine Program offices in Charleston and Newport. Questions should be referred to ODFW Licensing Section, (503) 872-5275.
