Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program Offers Educational Opportunities for Spring and Summer
PORTLAND - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife currently is accepting registrations for the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshops scheduled across the state in April, May and June. These outdoor skills workshops are designed primarily for beginners, but offer great opportunities for those with intermediate and advanced skill levels as well.
Upcoming workshops include a shotgun clinic with skeet and trap shooting at Mitchell's Clay Target Sport Center near Woodburn on April 12, fly fishing at Wizard Falls Hatchery near Sisters on April 26-27, kayaking and hiking at Cove Palisades State Park near Redmond on May 3-4 and a multi-activity workshop at La Pine State Park on June 7-8. These workshops all cost $60 to attend and include the use of any necessary equipment, instruction, resource materials and most meals. Camping at no additional charge also is offered at Wizard Falls Hatchery, Cove Palisades State Park and La Pine State Park.
Over the past several years, the BOW program has expanded to offer more workshops, based on requests from past participants.
"La Pine State Park is one of our most popular workshops during the year," Smogor said. "With about 15 activities to choose from, there is something to fit everyone's interests."
There also is a three-day weekend workshop scheduled at Rockaway Beach, near Tillamook, from June 13-15. This event offers more than 20 different coastal activities from which to choose. Information for this event will be available by mid-April.
Additional workshops are being scheduled for July though November, in locations throughout the state. Planned activities include fly fishing for steelhead on the Grand Ronde River and a parent/child workshop at Sauvie Island Wildlife Area, near Portland.
