Fish and Wildlife Commission meets Friday
Black-tailed deer seasons and predator trap check requirements on agenda
SALEM - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will vote Friday on interim biological standards as part of the Native Fish Conservation Policy and will hear briefings on black-tailed deer 2004 hunting season options and predator trap check requirements.
Friday's regular meeting of the Commission is the first to be held in the new Salem headquarters of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission is the policy-making body for fish and wildlife issues in the state. The seven-member panel meets monthly. The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at 3406 Cherry Ave. N.E., just off the Salem Parkway.
In conjunction with the monthly meeting, the Commission will host an evening public reception Thursday, Sept. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. also at the ODFW Salem headquarters. Members of the public are invited to attend to meet the Commissioners and see ODFW's new building.
The following items are on the agenda:
· Director's Report, including recent regional activities, selection of the Wolf Advisory Committee, update on the Hatchery Research Center, bighorn sheep tag allocation to the Warm Springs Tribe and update on the upcoming commercial crab season;
· Rulemaking to adopt interim biological standards and to delete inconsistent or redundant language in the Native Fish Conservation Policy;
· Rulemaking on Fish Health Management Policy;
· Informational briefing on warm water fish management;
· Approval of funding requests for Access and Habitat Projects;
· Informational briefing on black-tailed deer hunter and harvest information in preparation for adoption of 2004 hunting seasons; and
· Informational briefing and testimony from invited speakers on predator and bear trap check requirements in preparation for public testimony and rulemaking in October in Roseburg.
Public testimony will be taken on each agenda item with the exception of the informational briefing on the predator and bear trap check requirements. Sign-up sheets will be provided at the meeting. Agenda item exhibits may be requested by calling the ODFW Director's Office at (503) 947-6044.
Persons seeking to testify for up to five minutes on other issues not on the formal agenda may do so by making arrangements at least 24 hours in advance. "Unscheduled testimony" must be arranged by calling Mike Lueck, ODFW Director's Office, at (503) 947-6044. Unscheduled testimony occurs around 1 p.m. and is limited to about six speakers.
