Grant money available for private lands habitat restoration

SALEM - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is soliciting grant applications from landowners and conservation organizations to conduct habitat restoration or enhancement projects to aid threatened, endangered or sensitive species on private land. Applications must be received by Oct. 1, 2003. 

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has made $1.56 million available under the Landowner Incentive Program to establish or supplement state landowner incentive programs that provide technical and financial assistance to private landowners for the protection and management of habitats used by endangered, threatened or sensitive species. The grant funds will be distributed through the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. 

Examples of projects that could qualify for funding include riparian fencing to exclude livestock from sensitive habitats, planting of native vegetation to restore degraded habitats, fish migration barrier removal or in-stream habitat improvements. 

Grant awards require a 25 percent cost-share match, which may be provided through in-kind services such as volunteer labor.
