ODFW seeks input on fall hunting seasons at upcoming public meetings
SALEM - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will host 21 public
meetings in May to accept public comment on proposals for the number of
tags for this fall's controlled big game hunting seasons and the 2005
hunting regulations.
ODFW biologists will explain each of the proposals at the informal
meetings scheduled statewide between Monday, May 3, and Thursday, May
20. The proposals call for a reduction in the authorized numbers of
controlled deer and controlled elk tags, and an increase in the number
of controlled tags authorized for bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain goat,
pronghorn and spring bear. Proposals are available later this week by
contacting an ODFW office or by calling the ODFW Wildlife Division at
(503) 947-6300.
In Oregon, two types of hunting seasons are authorized: general season
and controlled season. During the controlled seasons, the number of tags
is limited and hunters must apply for them by May 15. There is no limit
to the number of general season tags sold.
The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission, the rule-making body for ODFW,
will set the number of tags available for the 2004 controlled hunts at
its June 11 meeting in Baker City. Commissioners will receive a summary
of all the public input before the meeting.
