Grouse Hunters: ODFW is collecting wings and tails for research
ROSEBURG - With the opening of grouse season Wednesday, Sept. 1, ODFW
reminds successful hunters to collect a wing and the tail from each bird
harvested. Biologists later examine the wings and tails to determine
species and age of the birds to better manage the population.
ODFW asks hunters to place the entire wing and tail, including small
feathers, from each bird in separate brown paper bags and mark the
general location and county where harvested. Hunters may use specially
designed bags available at ODFW offices or plain paper bags.
Bags should be deposited as soon as possible in marked collection
barrels located on major forest roads and at ODFW district offices. If
this is not possible, hunters should freeze the bags until they can be
dropped off.
