Daily limit increases to three steelhead in Clackamas and Sandy rivers
today
SALEM - Effective today, anglers may retain up to three hatchery-bred
summer steelhead per day in the Clackamas River up to North Fork Dam and
in the Sandy River up to Marmot Dam, the Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife announced today.
Biologists recommended the summer steelhead bag limit change after
determining the run size this year in the Clackamas River at North Fork
is about five times higher than the five-year average at this time. In
the Sandy River, angling for summer steelhead has been very good and
ODFW biologists want to maximize catch.
The newly adopted rule allows anglers to retain one additional adipose
fin-clipped steelhead within the normal daily bag limit in the Clackamas
River from the mouth upstream to North Fork Dam and in the Sandy River
from the mouth upstream to Marmot Dam through Nov. 23, 2004. The
permanent daily limit within the Willamette fishing zone is two adipose
fin-clipped salmon or steelhead. Fish with a missing adipose fin
identifies them as hatchery bred.
The director of ODFW has the authority to adopt temporary rules in
situations where biological data allows expanded recreational
opportunities. Temporary rules adopted by the director must be approved
by the Commission at the next regular meeting.
