Improvements slated for Trask Fish Hatchery

TILLAMOOK - Two grants totaling $15,000 from the Oregon Department of
Fish and Wildlife's Fish Restoration and Enhancement Program will be
used to make plumbing improvements and construct a portable anesthetic
tank at the Trask Fish Hatchery.

The plumbing project will allow water used at the hatchery's
incubation facility to be redirected to a settling pond to better meet
Oregon Department of Environmental Quality's effluent discharge
requirements.

A portable anesthetic tank also will be constructed for use at the
Trask Hatchery when coho salmon are being collected for spawning, and at
Cedar Creek Hatchery for winter steelhead collection. Fish often are
temporarily anesthetized for various fish hatchery operations and
research projects to make them easier to handle. Both projects are
scheduled to be completed this fall.

The Fish Restoration and Enhancement Program was created by the Oregon
Legislature in 1989 and is funded by a surcharge on sport and commercial
fishing licenses and commercial poundage fees. The program is overseen
by a seven-member citizen board that reviews proposals and makes funding
recommendations to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission for fish
restoration and enhancement projects throughout the state.
