Science team to discuss coastal coho conservation in Cannon Beach
SALEM - State and federal officials with Oregon's Coastal Coho project
today announced a stakeholder team meeting April 8 in Cannon Beach to
discuss a conservation strategy for the state's native coho salmon.
The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cannon Beach
Community Hall, 207 N. Spruce Street.
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials will present an
overview of the state's Native Fish Conservation Policy, and briefing of
how the policy has benefited coho in the Lower Columbia River. This
framework likely will be used to develop the conservation plan for
coastal coho.
The meeting is open to the public, and public comment will be accepted
at 3 p.m.
The state last month released the draft Oregon Coastal Coho Assessment,
which concluded the Oregon Coast Coho Evolutionarily Significant Unit is
biologically viable, and continued conservation efforts are adequate to
maintain viability. The state will provide NOAA Fisheries with a final
report by April 30 for consideration in the federal ESA listing
decision.
The state of Oregon and NOAA Fisheries began a collaborative project in
2004 to address conservation of coastal coho. The objectives are to:
* assess actions under the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds to
conserve and rebuild coastal coho populations;
* provide information for NOAA Fisheries' summer 2005 listing decision;
* establish a basis to seek legal assurances for local landowners; and
* develop a conservation plan consistent with the Oregon Plan for Salmon
and Watersheds and Native Fish Conservation Policy, as well as federal
recovery plan guidelines.
The Stakeholder Team advises the state of Oregon and NOAA Fisheries on
policy aspects of the Coastal Coho Project. Team members represent
natural resource users, local governments, tribes, watershed councils,
conservation organizations, and commercial and recreational fishers.
