Great fishing opportunities at Lemolo Reservoir and Diamond Lake
ROSEBURG - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is forecasting an
excellent April 23 spring trout opener for anglers on Lemolo Reservoir
and Diamond Lake.
Lemolo Reservoir contains naturally occurring brown trout, which offer a
challenging fishery. ODFW plans to stock Lemolo with 5,000 rainbow trout
from May through August. Lemolo offers good boat and bank angling.
"At Diamond Lake, the ice is off, and with holdover trophy trout and
11,000 more trout stocked this week, we expect an excellent opening
weekend for trout fishing," said Jim Muck, Umpqua Watershed District
Fish Biologist.
Muck points out that although ODFW will treat Diamond Lake with rotenone
in fall 2006, a full fishery is planned for this summer and next spring.
"We will stock 45,000 rainbow trout throughout the 2005 season at
Diamond Lake. Drawing down Diamond Lake won't begin until September, so
this summer should provide good fishing," Muck said.
According to the Diamond Lake Restoration Project's Final Environmental
Impact Statement, the Umpqua National Forest will begin reconstructing
the drainage canal at the north end of the lake this summer. The lake
will be lowered by eight feet beginning in September 2005 and ending in
April 2006 to prepare for ODFW's rotenone treatment in the fall of 2006.
Good trout fishing should be available through mid-summer 2006.
A trout stocking schedule is available at the Roseburg ODFW office or by
checking the ODFW Web site at www.dfw.state.or.us. More information on
the Diamond Lake Restoration Project can be found on the Umpqua National
Forest Web site at www.fs.fed.us/r6/umpqua.
