ODFW seeking public input on 2005 big game tag allocations and potential
changes to archery season
BEND - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will host five public
meetings in the High Desert Region in May to accept public comment on
proposals for the number of tags for this fall's controlled big game
hunting seasons. Other topics to be discussed include big game hunting
season dates for 2006 and potential changes to archery season. Potential
changes for archery season may include the establishment of archery
hunting zones and limited entry restrictions. Clair Kunkel, Deschutes
District Watershed Manager, encourages the public to attend because "it
is an opportunity for folks to have input into the regulation setting
process."
In Oregon, two types of hunting seasons are authorized; general season
and controlled season. During the controlled seasons, the number of tags
is limited and hunters must apply for them by May 15. There is no limit
to the number of general season tags sold.
The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission, the rule-making body for ODFW,
will set the number of tags available for the 2005 controlled hunts at
its June 10 meeting in Salem. Commissioners will receive a summary of
all the public meeting input prior to their June meeting.
The following public meetings are scheduled in the High Desert Region:
ONTARIO: Monday, May 2, 7-9 p.m., Malheur County Extension Office, 710
SW 5th Ave.;
THE DALLES: Tuesday, May 3, 7-9 p.m., ODFW Fish Screens Shop, 3561
Klindt Drive;
REDMOND: Wednesday, May 3, 7-9 p.m., Redmond High School, 675 SW
Rimrock;
KLAMATH FALLS: Tuesday, May 10, 7-9 p.m., OSU Extension Office, 3328
Vandenberg Rd;
BURNS: Thursday, May 12, 7-9 p.m., Museum Club Room, 18 West D Street.
Sportsmen may also testify at the May 13 Commission meeting in
Prineville and the June 10 meeting in Salem. Written comments are also
welcomed. They may be sent to ODFW Wildlife Division, 3406 Cherry Ave
NE, Salem, OR 97303 or e-mailed to Thomas.L.Thornton at state.or.us
