September a good time to think about safety

SALEM - "As the traditional start of the fall hunting season, September
is a good time to remind everyone to be safe in the woods," said Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife Education Services Section Manager Kenn
Condon.

The best way for hunters and non-hunters alike to stay safe when in
areas where hunting is occurring is to wear blaze orange, noted Condon.

"It's a highly visible color that stands out among the greens and browns
of nature," said Condon. ODFW encourages the use of blaze orange as a
standard safety measure during hunting seasons.

"Oregon's hunters have a very good safety record, and we want to keep it
that way," said Condon. "Even one fatality is too much."

Last year there was one hunting fatality in Oregon. One hunting fatality
occurred in 2003, three in 2002, three in 2001 and two in 2000,
according to Oregon State Police reports.
