Commercial sardine fishery moved to limited entry
SALEM - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission today approved a measure
to move the state's commercial sardine fishery from a developmental
fishery to a limited entry fishery.
Pacific sardines are jointly managed by the states of Oregon, Washington
and California, and the Pacific Fishery Management Council.
Sardine landings off the Oregon Coast over the past seven years have
increased steadily, and at more than 40 metric tons this year sardines
rank among the largest commercial fishery in Oregon.
The Commission decision changes the status of the fishery, formalizing
the stable status of Oregon's sardine stocks, and allowing state fishery
managers to establish 20 commercial fishing permits.
The next regular meeting of the OFWC is Jan. 5-6 in Salem.
