Coho angling on Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes closes Dec. 15
SALEM - The second full fishing season for wild coho salmon in Siltcoos
and Tahkenitch lakes will close on Dec. 15, the scheduled end to the
season. Fishery managers to not expect the harvest quota to be met for
either lake.
Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes, located near Florence, were opened for
the harvest of wild coho Oct. 1. The season was authorized by ODFW in
cooperation with NOAA Fisheries because it targets fish from two healthy
runs and is managed conservatively to ensure protection of the resource.
The season in each lake extends through Dec. 15, or attainment of the
harvest quota, whichever comes first.
The harvest quota of adult coho is set at 300 on Siltcoos Lake and 200
for Tahkenitch Lake, down from 600 and 400 the previous year. This
year's quota levels reflect concerns that returns of adult coho to
Oregon's rivers would be reduced. ODFW biologists felt a more
conservative approach was appropriate while still providing a fishery
for sport anglers.
Although the coho fishery on both lakes was slower than the previous
year, ODFW fishery biologists are pleased to note this year's fishery
ran smoothly while providing considerable recreation to Oregon's
anglers. Biologists believe this year's slower fishery is due to a
smaller return of adult coho in combination with unpleasant fishing
conditions during much of November, which typically is the peak month
for harvesting adult coho.
Anglers can check the ODFW Web site for information on a closure at

the Newport ODFW Office, (541) 867-4741, or ODFW Headquarters in Salem,
