Angling Rules Change for Thief Valley Reservoir
LA GRANDE - Drought conditions in Eastern Oregon have prompted
biologists to remove daily catch limits starting Sept. 2 at Thief Valley
Reservoir in Southeast Oregon. Biologists expect a late summer die-off
of fish in the next week because of low and warm water conditions.
Thief Valley Reservoir on the Powder River is expected to reach 'dead
storage' level no later than early September because the remaining
irrigation storage water will be drained. When the water level drops,
large numbers of stocked hatchery trout and some warm water game fish
will be trapped in isolated pools, stressed by warm and turbid water,
and will die.
The temporary rules opens angling for all game species in Thief Valley
Reservoir with the following conditions: (a) No daily catch or
possession limits. (b) Harvest allowed by hand, dip net or angling.
The amended regulations are in effect from Sept. 2 to Sept. 30, 2005.
